‘Superb’ period drama adaptation of classic Bronte novel on BBC now
The BBC adaptation starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens, is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer and viewers are calling it a ‘true masterpiece’
For countless readers, classic English literature is considered sacred, and screen adaptations often face substantial scrutiny – however, this particular production seems to portray the 19th century with striking authenticity.
First aired in 2006, this interpretation of Jane Eyre draws from Charlotte Brontë’s novel of the same title, following the journey of its eponymous protagonist as she navigates orphanhood while attempting to build a better life.
Across four episodes, the production guides audiences through this enduring narrative, with Ruth Wilson assuming the lead role opposite Toby Stephens as Edward Rochester.
The pair progressively develop feelings for each other despite his strange behaviour and the mysterious noises she detects reverberating throughout the home.
Ultimately, it’s revealed he’s hiding not simply a sinister secret, but an actual person, with devastating ramifications for all concerned.
Viewers have been effusive in their praise of Wilson’s interpretation of Jane Eyre, a turn that secured her a BAFTA nomination. One fan posted on IMDB to share their appreciation in an enthusiastic review, reports the Liverpool Echo.
It said: “A wonderful adaptation of this classic. The casting is excellent; Ruth makes a delightful and intriguing Jane, and Toby Stephens is an utterly fantastic Rochester.
“This is a compelling series; each episode leaves you anxious to see the next. The set designers and costume designers have excelled themselves, and the lighting in particular is superb.”
Another viewer added: “This is the first adaptation of Jane Eyre that I have seen, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Ruth Wilson, a relative newcomer to TV, is fantastic in the role of Jane.
“She captivates the role brilliantly, and her facial expressions say it all; she needs not ever speak. She is an amazing actress, and I hope to see her more in the future.”
Upon its initial broadcast, despite the existence of numerous highly-regarded adaptations, it achieved success with both audiences and critics alike.
The reception was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with critics commending how faithfully the series adhered to the original material while simultaneously captivating viewers.
Discussing the novel, The Hollywood Reporter declared at the time that its adaptation was “restoring it to its full glory.
Meanwhile, The Guardian suggested it demonstrated that compelling drama could be created by “telling the story straight”.
Before this version, there had been a 1943 film featuring Orson Welles, as well as a 1983 BBC miniseries with Timothy Dalton.
However, it’s often the 2006 BBC series that’s cited as the superior adaptation amongst these.
One viewer said: “What a true masterpiece. ” It is superb, anyone who does not like this version is mad. It has all the right qualities for a classic. Ruth Wilson is superb, and I cannot believe that she is only fresh out of drama school, what a brilliant actress.”
For those wishing to experience Ruth Wilson’s interpretation of Jane Eyre, the four-part series can presently be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
