ED Sheeran superfan Paige Bates, who sang one of his hits at her mother’s funeral, performs for the superstar backstage in this touching video.

A few months ago, talented 13-year-old Paige Bates, an aapiring singer from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire, lost her mum Cathy, 33, to breast cancer.

Now she’s the envy of Ed fans everywhere as she got to perform her own version of his latest hit Shape Of You backstage at the Newcastle date of his cancer.

Not only that, but the 26-year-old singer-songwriter was clearly amazed at Paige’s skills, and had no idea how she played his song so well on a small guitalele.

Later he signed the instrument and left a very positive impression on the youngster, who was expecting to meet a more arrogant star.

Paige, who hopes to get spotted by scouts for The Voice UK, said of the experience: “I was a little bit nervous, but two days before I did karaoke in a bar so I wouldn’t get nervous when I sang in front of Ed Sheeran.

“I knew I was going to ask if I’d be allowed to sing with him or to him so I had to practice as much as I could.

“He’s not self-centred whatsoever like you’d expect a celebrity to be, he’s so nice and polite.”

Paige had sung another Sheeran song, Photograph, at her mum’s funeral in Holy Trinity Church, Holmfirth and later recorded it in a Dublin studio.

She got to meet Ed after she and her 14-year-old sister Savannah were bought tickets for the Newcastle gig by their mum’s friend Liz, who also called Ed’s management team to arrange the meeting.

Liz, 36, said:  “It was such a good experience for Paige and Savannah to share together because their mum brought them up on Ed Sheeran’s music.

“He was so nice. He told her that he started singing when he was 11 and even said that she sings better than he did at her age.

“He really encouraged Paige to pursue her passion and told her she has to practice every day if she wants to get to the level he’s at now,” she added.
