A woman from Thompson, Man., is hoping to make a difference in a child’s life through the gift of music.

Jayde Penton, 22, had tickets to Ed Sheeran’s show Saturday night at the Bell MTS Centre, but when she saw a tweet from the Children’s Hospital, looking for tickets for one of their young patients, she decided to give hers up so the boy could go.

Sheeran’s music helped her through a hard time in life when she was younger, she said.

“I was actually struggling with depression. I was unable to go to school for a while. I was kind of stuck in the house for quite a while, and I just listened to his music a lot,” said Penton.

Penton has seen Sheeran live before, driving eight hours to see him open for Taylor Swift in 2013.

“I just kind of forgot about everything that I was going through,” she said. “I just felt like this child could have those couple hours at the concert tonight just to forget everything and have the time of their life.”

Penton hopes the tickets will give the boy and his mom a happy memory to look back on.

Teen superfan stuck in hospital

Winnipeg teenager and Ed Sheeran superfan Frankie Hilton was also looking forward to seeing her idol play live for the first time, but she fell ill in April and has been sick ever since.

“It was very sudden,” her mother Pam Hilton said.

What started as general exhaustion developed into nausea so bad that Frankie lost 25 pounds and hasn’t been able to function these past few months.

But before she got sick, her parents bought a pair of Sheeran tickets the moment they went on sale and planned on surprising their daughter on her 13th birthday. The initial idea was to play dumb and pretend they weren’t going to let Frankie go to the show, Hilton says, until her father caved under the pressure.

“My husband is a bit of a softy and said, ‘We’ve got to tell her, look at the poor kid’s face.’ So we told her and she screamed,” said Hilton.

“Oh my gosh, if she could be any bigger a fan … she loves him, loves him.”

Pam Hilton says her 13-year-old daughter Frankie fell ill in April and has been sick ever since. She had two tickets to see her idol Ed Sheeran at his Winnipeg show, but is in hospital and unable to go.

With Frankie in hospital as the date neared, and doctors still trying to get to the bottom of what’s wrong, it started to become apparent that she and the friend she planned to take with her wouldn’t be able to make it to see Sheeran.

Frankie has taken everything in stride and maintained a positive attitude even after that realization set in.

“She’s a pretty sweet kid, she was going with her best friend and she was more concerned that her best friend couldn’t go,” Hilton said.

“She said, ‘You know mom, I’ll go to the next one.’ She would love to meet him, obviously, because she is madly in love with him and she admires him actually as an artist as well.”

Family friend Reagan Mae Kuzyk‏ took it upon herself to wade into Sheeran’s Twitter feed in hopes of getting his attention and convincing him to stop by to see Fankie in the hospital in Winnipeg.

The sold-out show starts at 7:30 p.m. As of 4:30 p.m., there was no word on whether Sheeran had reached out to the Hiltons.
