A Detroit radio host has sparked debate after questioning a decision involving the late Kyle Busch’s racing legacy and his young son’s future in motorsport.
Marc Fellhauer, co-host of “The Drew Lane Show,” criticised the choice by Busch’s former team to reserve the driver’s iconic No. 8 car number, suggesting it may place pressure on the late NASCAR star’s 11-year-old son, Brexton, to follow in his father’s footsteps.
“Saving his number for his kid, who is 11, to race. Does that kid have to become a race car driver now?” Fellhauer said in a clip shared on social media on Monday, May 25. “What if that kid, I don’t know, wants to be a dancer?”
Co-host Drew Lane responded by agreeing that the situation could create expectations for the child, calling it “a little pressure on that kid.”
The comments came after Richard Childress Racing confirmed it would suspend the use of Kyle Busch’s No. 8 following his sudden death on Thursday, May 21, at the age of 41.
In a statement, the team said: “Kyle Busch was instrumental in the design of RCR’s stylized No. 8 and it has become synonymous with Kyle and an important symbol for his fans and the NASCAR industry. No one can carry it forward to the level that he did.”
Fellhauer later said he felt sympathy for Brexton, questioning the emotional weight of linking the retired number to a child still grieving his father.
“I felt bad for that kid,” he said. “It’s like, he just lost his dad and now he has to become a race car driver?”
He added that while Brexton may eventually choose racing on his own, the timing and messaging felt unnecessary. “Just retire his number and then we’ll deal with the other part down the line,” he said.
Despite the debate, Brexton has already shown strong interest in motorsport. His social media accounts regularly feature clips from his junior racing career, which began when he was just five years old.
“I’m chasing my dream of being just like my dad, a multi-time NASCAR Cup Series champion!” he wrote on Instagram in June 2025. “Make sure to keep up with my journey to the top!”
His late father’s final Instagram post, shared shortly before his death, highlighted Brexton’s passion for racing while celebrating his 11th birthday.
“Happy Birthday Brexton!!! Your mom & I are so proud of who you’re turning out to be!” Kyle Busch wrote on May 18. “You’re the best kid on & off the track, you amaze us every day. Keep doing what you’re doing and there is no limit to what you’ll accomplish! Love you buddy!”
Busch’s sudden death has since been attributed to severe medical complications. A family representative confirmed on May 23 that he died after pneumonia developed into sepsis, causing rapid and severe complications.
His death certificate, obtained exclusively on May 27, further revealed that sepsis led to disseminated intravascular coagulation — a condition where small blood clots form in the bloodstream and restrict oxygen flow to organs — ultimately resulting in hemorrhagic shock caused by severe internal or external bleeding.
The NASCAR community continues to mourn the loss of the motorsport icon as discussions around his legacy and family legacy continue to unfold.
