King Charles kept calm and carried on with a royal duty amid drama surrounding his son Prince Harry’s visit to the U. K.

The King, 77, traveled to Bovington, in southwestern England, on Monday, July 6, to visit with the Royal Tank Regiment as they celebrated their Families’ Day at the Tank Museum.

The British monarch arrived in a 1920 Pattern Rolls-Royce Armoured Car, the oldest vehicle in the Tank Museum’s working fleet, which previously carried his mother, Queen Elizabeth, during a visit to the regiment in 1997.

Inside, King Charles met with museum staff, spoke with four of the RTR’s former Colonels-Commandant and learned about current innovations in the regiment’s tank operations, including a next-generation Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank and 3D-printed equipment.

Outside, the King presented medals to soldiers on parade and met with their families and friends before removing his jacket and donning a helmet and sunglasses to take a ride in the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank.

The King’s outing came on the same day that his younger son, Prince Harry, arrived in the U.K. ahead of a week of events linked to the Duke of Sussex’s longstanding charities, including the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

Shortly before King Charles’ outing on Monday, Prince Harry’s spokesperson said an offer for the Duke of Sussex to stay at Buckingham Palace during his London visit had been withdrawn after he had formally accepted it. Palace sources, however, disputed that account, saying Harry failed to respond by the required deadline and that a later request came only after arrangements could no longer be made.

The spokesperson said it was “disappointing that the offer has now been withdrawn,” adding that Harry had spent the previous week arranging private security for him and his family’s visit. Once those plans were in place, Harry’s team said, he accepted the offer to stay at the palace.

PEOPLE previously reported that Harry, 41, and Meghan Markle, 44, planned to bring their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, on the trip to visit Britain, marking the first time Harry’s family has been back to the U.K. since 2022.

Despite King Charles’ offer of accommodation on a royal estate, Harry ultimately decided Meghan, Archie and Lilibet would not accompany him to London after they learned the family would receive police protection only while on royal property.

Palace sources said Harry’s visit was additionally complicated by the impending judgement in his court case against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), the publisher behind the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday, which is due on Tuesday.

The Duke of Sussex is one of several high-profile figures — including Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley and Jude Law‘s ex-wife, Sadie Frost — who have ANL over claims of unlawful information gathering. The palace said that Harry’s involvement in the case and the timing of the judgment created constitutional considerations for his visit, noting that it was important that the King’s position could not appear compromised while litigation involving his younger son was still active. They stressed that accommodation at a royal residence remains available for Harry and his family on a future visit.

Harry’s team pushed back, maintaining that he had acted in good faith throughout the process.
