Andrew De Leon walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage looking like he belonged at a Marilyn Manson concert. Moments later, he had the judges and audience completely stunned with a powerful opera performance that earned him a standing ovation.

Dressed entirely in black, De Leon appeared in full goth style, complete with striking blue contact lenses, heavy eyeliner and a studded wristband. His appearance immediately suggested that the performance might be something loud and rock-oriented.

But De Leon had something entirely different planned.

From nervous outsider to opera sensation

Before taking the stage, De Leon described himself as an outcast and admitted that he had never sung in public before.

He had never even performed for his own parents, who were sitting in the audience to watch their son take one of the biggest steps of his life.

As De Leon began his audition, the music initially gave the audience little indication of what was coming. Then, instead of launching into a rock song, he began singing softly in an operatic style.

The reaction in the room changed almost instantly.

What had started with puzzled expressions quickly turned into shock as his voice filled the stage. Despite his obvious nerves, De Leon delivered a performance powerful enough to bring the audience to its feet.

Some members of the crowd were visibly moved by what they had just heard.

“I’m just so used to being rejected”

After finishing his audition, De Leon was asked by judge Howard Stern how he was feeling.

His answer revealed just how much the moment meant to him.

“I’m just so used to being rejected, and I’m not really good at anything, so this is amazing,” he said.

The judges were unanimous in their decision to send him through to the next stage of the competition.

Sharon Osbourne was particularly impressed by both his voice and his individuality.

“Please don’t say you’re not good at anything, because you’ve got an amazing voice, and you are an individual,” she told him. “I’m definitely in love with you now.”

The response from the judges marked a remarkable turnaround for someone who had entered the audition expecting to be seen as an outsider.

His parents witnessed the moment

For De Leon, the audition was made even more meaningful by the presence of his parents.

Having never sung for them before, he was finally able to share his hidden talent in front of them—and in front of a packed audience and the America’s Got Talent judges.

The performance transformed his first public singing experience into a triumphant moment.

With unanimous approval from the judges, De Leon advanced to the Las Vegas stage of the competition, leaving behind the image of the nervous outsider and introducing audiences to a voice nobody expected from his striking appearance.
