“Regardless of whether you have a disability or not, you can do absolutely anything you set your mind to,” is what blind singer Sarah Hardwig had to say before her powerful audition on America’s Got Talent. Her message was inspiring, but that was just the start, as seeing the soul and power with which she sang Lainey Wilson’s “Heart Like a Truck” was the clincher. Sarah stripped it back to the essentials, with just her voice and acoustic guitar, which was perfect for bringing out all the feels during her cover.
Sarah’s mum was tearing up throughout the performance, but she wasn’t the only one whose heart Sarah touched. The audience began getting on their feet and applauding mid-song as she played. By the time of Sarah’s big closing note, she had the whole crowd on their feet and cheering for her. Sarah’s audition was one of the biggest country performances of the season. When America’s Got Talent uploaded her performance on July 22, 2026, it hit 388,000 views in two weeks. Her performance hit the spot for viewers, who added comments such as “That voice is unmistakable! She’s so ready for this, I loved the song and her tone. She’s going places.” and “Sarah, as a blind person, you just made me proud. I love how you inspire those of us who have a disability and are not afraid to put our talent on display.”
So far Sarah has only made a single appearance on America’s Got Talent. Her performance highlighted what a great tune Lainey’s “Heart Like a Truck” is. The Louisiana hitmaker delivered a smoldering rendition of the song at CMT Artists of the Year in 2022. Lainey really knows how to engage with the crowd, and her emotions come through in her vocal performance so clearly.
The America’s Got Talent judges were clearly very touched by Sarah Hardwig’s audition. Howie Mandel opened the judges’ comments by saying, “That was beautiful and heartwarming. You are the epitome of resilience to show up here and sing your heart out, and to move three or four thousand strangers in this room.” Mel B was also complimentary, but criticized Sarah’s song choice, saying that she had the voice to pick a “bigger” song. Sofía Vergara disagreed, saying she loved everything about the audition. Simon Cowell agreed with Mel B, but noted that “however, that was a really, really good audition.”
