56-year-old nurse Joan Thomas had a nervous and shaky start on Britain’s Got Talent 2026, but when the crowd heard THAT haunting voice, their jaws just about hit the floor! It was clearly a big effort just to stand on that stage for Joan, but when she opened her mouth, the voice of an old-time opera star came out, and the whole room was totally mesmerized. It’s hard to recall any Britain’s Got Talent auditions where the crowd sat in total silence, as if in a trance, the whole time.
It was clear Joan had a big impact on the crowd, as audience members could be seen tearing up as she sang the requiem “Pie Jesu”. You could tell the judges were rooting for her, as she seemed like such a lovely lady. And then when she delivered the goods with her performance, Simon Cowell just had the biggest smile on his face at 2:22. The Music Man has to say, if you see Simon smiling like that during your audition, you know you’re doing something right!
Britain’s Got Talent uploaded Joan’s audition on April 12, 2026, and in the following two weeks, it hit 214,000 views. The audition hit the spot for viewers, who added comments such as “When your sister cried, I cried. My goodness, how absolutely special. That was special, despite the obvious nerves” and “I am NOT an opera fan. I don’t even like the sound of it. BUT this beautiful lady singing this song that I truly didn’t understand a word of, moved me to tears. Absolutely beautiful.”
So far Joan has only made one appearance on Britain’s Got Talent. She is not the only talented singer who delivered a memorable performance of “Pie Jesu” on the show, though. Thirteen-year-old Malakai Bayoh scored a 15 million view audition with his take on the hymn. There was nary a dry eye in the house by the time he was done. And with high runs like the one at 4:34, it’s easy to understand why!
The audience weren’t the only ones getting emotional during Joan’s audition. She was clearly very worked up about performing on the big stage, and she really let her emotions out as the crowd applauded her.
Simon Cowell said, “Joan, it was a great audition. Very simple, beautifully sang. That’s sometimes all a great audition needs.” The Music Man is pleased to report that Joan then got four yes votes from the judges. Seeing the look of relief and happiness on her face afterwards was such a feelgood moment.
