EXCLUSIVE: Landman star Billy Bob Thornton has opened up about the season 1 finale’s ominous coyote scene and what viewers can expect from Tommy Norris in season 2.

Landman: Billy Bob Thornton Reveals Surprising Fact About Finale

Landman, the smash-hit drama from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, has returned for season 2 – and things are set to become even more turbulent for Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton).

The first season finale of the Paramount Plus programme concluded dramatically, leaving Tommy’s prospects hanging in the balance as he gears up to assume his new position as president of M-Tex Oil.

The episode also featured the protagonist being kidnapped and subjected to torture by the cartel, before crime boss Gallino (Andy Garcia) secures his release, telling him he wishes to ‘be friends’.

Yet, in the closing moments of the programme, Tommy delivers a mysterious warning to a coyote after it comes back to discover another coyote’s body in his garden. Referencing the occasion when his neighbour shot the first coyote, he warns it: “You better run buddy. They kill coyotes around here.”

Whilst he seems to be speaking to the coyote, it’s evident that Tommy is actually addressing himself. In an exclusive chat, Billy Bob Thornton has discussed the foreboding final scene and its implications for his character moving forward.

When questioned about why Tommy cannot heed his own counsel, Thornton explained: “Well, when he leaves in this crazy world he lives in sometimes, it’s just impossible, you know.

“There are things he has to do that aren’t necessarily what he always wants to do. I mean, I’m the president of the oil company. He certainly doesn’t want to be that. Tommy’s a driven person, you know, he wants to make things work.”

When asked whether viewers might witness a different dimension to Tommy’s character this series, Thornton said: “You’ll see all the colours this season. Every one of them.”

The star, who has also appeared in critically acclaimed films including Monster’s Ball, Sling Blade and A Simple Plan, discussed collaborating with his longtime friend Demi Moore.

He said: “It was great. We’ve never had the chance to actually see each other in a working relationship on a regular basis.

“So, yeah, it’s like I’m with an old pal. And the same goes for Sam Elliot, who I’ve known longer than any of them, and Andy Garcia who I’ve also known forever and I’ve never worked with him before.”

Sam Elliot has signed up for Landman’s second series and Thornton has teased he will feature prominently, reports the Express.

The Paramount Plus description for Landman reads: “Set in the boomtowns of West Texas, Landman is a modern tale of fortune seeking amongst roughnecks and wildcat billionaires – fueling an oil boom so big it’s reshaping the climate, the economy and geopolitics.”

The streaming service’s series two synopsis states: “In Season Two, as oil rises from the earth, so do secrets – and Tommy Norris’s (Thornton) breaking point may be closer than he realizes.

“Facing mounting pressure from M-Tex Oil, Cami Miller (Moore), and the shadow of his kin, survival in West Texas isn’t noble – it’s brutal. And sooner or later something’s got to break.”
