Viewers of the 2026 Golden Globes are reacting to Irish actor Paul Mescal missing out on winning the Best Supporting Actor accolade at the ceremony.

The annual ceremony officially kicked off awards season on Sunday, January 11, by celebrating the best films and television of 2025, airing live on CBS at 8 p.m. EST and streaming on Paramount+. Actress and comedian Nikki Glaser, 41, who made history as the first woman to host the event solo, returned to host for the second consecutive year.

There was tough competition across film and TV this year. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which won big at this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards, led with nine total nominations across the comedy/musical film categories, including Best Picture, Best Director and Hollywood legend Leonardo DiCaprio’s nod for Best Actor.

HBO’s The White Lotus had the most nominations across the various television categories, with six. Adolescence, which dominated the limited series categories at the Emmys in September, was up for five awards.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, the likes of Stellan Skarsgård (for Sentimental Value), Benicio Del Toro (for One Battle After Another), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Paul Mescal (Hamnet), Sean Penn (One Battle After Another) and Adam Sandler (Jay Kelly) were in the running.

And it was Swedish actor Stellan who took home the award, resulting in Paul missing out on a prestigious honor for the second time this year. While Paul’s fans were likely devastated, others were thrilled for Stellan, with one X user raving, “Well deserved! A huge actor!!!” as another added, “Exactly, the magic of the cinema cannot be understated.”

Someone else admitted, “Need to watch Hamnet and Secret Agent to figure out how happy/mad I should be about these awards,” with a fourth However, not all was lost for the 29-year-old star, as his film, Hamnet, nabbed the best film award, and his fellow Irishwoman and co-star, Jessie Buckley, was awarded Best Actress.

The 36-year-old actress portrayed William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes – historically known as Anne – in the film adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet, which follows the pair as they deal with the grief of losing their son. Her emotional performance had landed her at the heart of this year’s award season.

As she took to the stage to accept her award, she thanked her co-stars, gushing, “This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in. But thank you, Golden Globes. Thank you, Focus [Features], and everybody who supported this film. Chloe, Paul, Maggie, Max, Emily, Jacobi, Joe, the 400 extras, I adore you. I would rave in that Globe [Theatre] for the rest of my life with you.”

She continued, “It was such an extraordinary set to be part of, because, you know, we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived, and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish and mostly Polish crew, and beside our British family. I’d really like to thank our grip.

“During shooting, [he] started to disappear a little bit during the shoot. And I found him one day at the back of his truck, and he was chopping up potatoes and onions and meat, and he brought his ginormous cast-iron pot over from Poland. And he was making soup. And this soup started turning up on set. It was delicious. Thanks for bringing your pot to set.”

“Oh, my God, the incredible women I am honored to stand beside in this category. I mean, Julia Roberts, you are a hero to us all. Thank you. Jennifer [Lawrence], Renate [Reinsve], Eva [Victor], Tessa [Thompson], I’d watch you anytime, anywhere,” Jessie raved, before concluding, “You blow my mind. My husband, he’s really been enjoying the free canapes and cocktails. So, thank you so much. This is a real, real honor. I love what I do, and I love being part of this industry. Thank you.”

This year’s Golden Globes marked the third time the awards show has recognized popular movies that don’t fit the usual award categories with the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. Nominees included Avatar: Fire And Ash, KPop Demon Hunters and Wicked: For Good.
