Gabby Logan delivered an announcement during the BBC’s FIFA World Cup coverage.

The 53-year-old host returned to TV screens on Monday (June 22) to present BBC One’s coverage of Argentina’s Group J fixture against Austria in Dallas.

Gabby was accompanied in the Salford studio by Cesar Azpilicueta, Olivier Giroud and Ashley Williams. During half-time, the panel analysed Lionel Messi’s penalty miss, alongside his successful strike that came 30 minutes afterwards.

The presenter then looked ahead to England’s forthcoming fixture against Ghana, before pausing the football coverage to deliver a political update.

“We’re going to discuss England and Scotland towards the end of the programme, but it’s all going well for number 10 in Dallas. Not going quite so well at Number 10 in London,” Gabby said, reports the Mirror.

This follows Sir Keir Starmer appearing outside 10 Downing Street earlier today to announce his resignation as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party.

Sir Keir said that he accepted he was not best placed to lead Labour into the next general election, and that he had informed the King of his decision to step down.

Broadcasting live on the BBC, Gabby went on: “There’s a BBC News Special straight after the football. Here’s Sophie Raworth who’s in Downing Street.”

BBC News presenter Sophie then appeared on screen, saying: “Yes, the Prime Minister resigned this morning in what was, at times, a highly emotional speech. So, who will replace him here in Downing Street?”

An image of Andy Burnham then flashed up on screen, as the presenter stated: “Well, this was the welcome for Andy Burnham from Labour MPs when he arrived in Westminster just a few hours later.

The football coverage then resumed, with Gabby updating viewers on last night’s match results.

Following Sir Keir’s “breaking news” statement, BBC One has broadcast extensive coverage of the unfolding events, including Andy Burnham being sworn in as an MP after announcing his leadership bid.

This means EastEnders has been rescheduled from its 8.30pm slot on BBC One, and will now be shown at 9pm on BBC Two while Sophie Raworth hosts the live news programme.

Additional World Cup coverage will be transmitted on BBC One from 9.30pm as France face Iraq in their group fixture, with Kelly Cates presenting from Salford.
