Barrett Walsh Remembered as a Joyful 2-Year-Old as Disturbing Details Surrounding His Death Emerge

As Corie Walsh faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of her 2-year-old son, a newly published obituary is shifting attention away from the allegations and back to the little boy whose life was cut short.

Barrett Walsh, known affectionately by his family as “Bear,” is remembered not for the circumstances of his death, but as an energetic toddler who filled his days with music, games, animals and time with his siblings.

A Toddler Who Loved to Sing, Dance and Play

Barrett’s obituary describes him as “joyful, funny, entertaining” and “rambunctious.” He loved singing and dancing to children’s songs, learning his colors, counting aloud and kicking a soccer ball with friends.

At home, some of his happiest moments appeared to be the simplest ones. Barrett enjoyed bedtime stories, feeding Oscar a few too many treats and playing “Ready, Set, Go” with his older siblings, Grady and Anna. He was their cherished little brother while also being described as a caring big brother to the family’s baby boy.

Those memories now stand in painful contrast to what investigators say happened inside the family’s Frankfort, Illinois, home on Sept. 1.

Older Siblings Made the Devastating Discovery

Corie Walsh, 40, has been charged with first-degree murder after Barrett’s older siblings found the toddler unresponsive in the basement, according to court documents.

A neighbor called 911 and attempted CPR, but Barrett could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy later determined that his death was caused by asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck.

Authorities allege that Walsh was responsible for her son’s death. She was also found seriously injured inside the home after what investigators described as an attempt to take her own life.

Messages Sent Hours Earlier Add Another Layer to the Case

Investigators have also documented unusual communications from Walsh shortly before Barrett’s death.

According to court records, Walsh had been texting friends about jury deliberations in the Lindsay Clancy trial only hours before the tragedy. The messages were characterized as “confusing” and “out of character.”

In those exchanges, Walsh reportedly expressed the belief that Clancy’s husband — rather than Clancy herself — had killed the children.

The messages have become part of the disturbing timeline investigators are piecing together, though the material provided does not establish that Walsh’s interest in the Clancy case caused Barrett’s death.

Remembering “Bear”

For Barrett’s loved ones, however, his obituary preserves a very different story from the criminal case now surrounding his name.

He was a little boy who loved animals and bedtime stories, who danced enthusiastically, played soccer and turned an ordinary game with his siblings into something his family would remember.

As the case against his mother continues, those small details offer a portrait of Barrett beyond the allegations — the playful 2-year-old his family simply knew as “Bear.”
