New Details Emerge in Death of 2-Year-Old Barrett Walsh After Mother’s Disturbing Messages About Lindsay Clancy Case

The death of 2-year-old Barrett Walsh has taken another troubling turn, with newly disclosed court records revealing his cause of death while offering a closer look at his mother’s behavior in the hours before he was found.

Barrett was discovered by a neighbor in the basement of his family’s Frankfort, Illinois, home on Sept. 1. His mother, Corie Walsh, 40, was also found inside the residence and was allegedly attempting to harm herself with a knife.

Corie was subsequently arrested and is now facing three counts of first-degree murder. Her court records did not indicate a plea as of Sept. 14.

But alongside the new medical finding, investigators are confronting an unsettling timeline: just hours earlier, Corie had allegedly been sending increasingly frantic messages about the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.

What authorities determined about Barrett’s death

A criminal complaint states that Barrett’s cause of death was asphyxia “due to ligature compression of the neck.”

According to a separate petition filed by prosecutors, the neighbor who discovered Barrett told police that she found him hanging from a device attached to a basement rafter, with a ligature around his neck and his feet above the floor.

The neighbor called 911 and attempted CPR, but Barrett had no pulse and was cold when she found him, according to the filing.

The timing of the discovery created an especially distressing situation for the rest of the family. Corie’s two oldest children, both school age, returned home around the same time. An infant was also inside the house but was found unharmed.

Barrett, whose family called him “Bear,” was the third of Corie’s four children.

An intense focus on the Lindsay Clancy trial

The hours leading up to Barrett’s death have become another significant part of the case.

Corie had reportedly become deeply invested in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother whose murder case brought widespread attention to postpartum psychosis.

Corie’s attorney, Robert Kerr, said witnesses noticed a dramatic change in her behavior in the hours before Barrett’s death, describing her as acting “out of character.”

During that period, Corie allegedly participated in a group-chat discussion about the Clancy case and sent messages suggesting she was becoming increasingly distressed.

“It was manslaughter, please help I’m really freaking out,” Corie allegedly wrote, according to witness accounts discussed in court.

She also reportedly expressed the belief that Clancy’s husband had killed the couple’s children. The conspiracy theory she appeared to reference has been strongly rejected and debunked by Clancy’s attorney.

Corie’s lawyer raises a mental-health defense

Kerr has said Corie was severely mentally ill and was suffering from a “brief psychotic disorder” when Barrett died.

That claim could become a significant issue as the criminal proceedings continue, particularly given witness descriptions of her behavior shortly before the discovery.

However, the defense attorney’s characterization of Corie’s mental condition does not itself establish what happened or determine her legal responsibility. Those questions remain part of the ongoing court case.

Kerr declined to offer further comment when contacted about the case.

Three murder charges and another court date ahead

Corie has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 24.

The newly disclosed cause of Barrett’s death provides a clearer picture of what authorities believe happened physically inside the home. Yet another part of the timeline is likely to receive intense scrutiny as the case moves forward: Corie’s alleged fixation on the Clancy trial, the frantic messages witnesses say she sent just hours earlier, and the sudden change in behavior her defense attorney says others noticed before her son was found.
