Spencer Korwin’s Widow Remembers Her ‘Dream Husband’ After Shelter Island Tragedy: ‘Forever Isn’t Long Enough’

Carly Korwin fought through tears Sunday as she remembered the life she had built with her husband, Spencer Korwin, the 38-year-old former Team USA triathlete who died during a family vacation on Shelter Island just days earlier.

At a funeral service held Sept. 6 at Temple Israel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Spencer was remembered not simply for his athletic accomplishments, but as an energetic and devoted father, loving husband and lifelong prankster whose small gestures of affection had become part of his family’s everyday life.

“This is a nightmare. This is the worst day of my life,” Carly told mourners. Struggling to accept that her husband would not be coming home, she described Spencer as more than she could ever have hoped for in a husband, father and friend.

The couple shared what Carly described as a rare, once-in-a-lifetime love. “We always said forever isn’t long enough,” she said, reflecting on how suddenly the future they had imagined together disappeared.

A morning swim during a family vacation

Spencer, a Manhattan father of two, was vacationing with Carly and their daughters at The Pridwin Hotel on Shelter Island when he went for a morning swim on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

According to Shelter Island police, he entered the waters of Shelter Island Sound-North Channel near Crescent Beach at about 8 a.m. When he failed to return several hours later, Carly notified hotel staff, who contacted emergency services. Police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded shortly after noon.

What followed was an extensive multi-agency search involving marine units, divers, drones and U.S. Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews. Divers ultimately located Spencer underwater near the same dock from which he had entered the water, roughly seven hours after he was last seen. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have said the incident appears to have been an accidental drowning and that there is no indication of criminality. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office is responsible for determining the official cause and manner of death.

An accomplished athlete and devoted father

Spencer was far from an inexperienced swimmer.

He had competed for Team USA at the 2012 Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, and later built a professional career around health, fitness and athletic wellness.

But at his funeral, it was his role at home that took center stage.

Spencer and Carly were both Syracuse University graduates and began dating years after leaving the university. Together, they had two daughters — Sadie, 4, and Colette, 1 — and Carly said they had hoped their family would continue to grow.

That future, she told mourners, was among the things suddenly taken from them.

Carly described a husband who made affection part of the family’s daily routine. Spencer regularly wrote notes for his wife and daughters and left them around their apartment. He planned surprises, offered spontaneous hugs and even arranged automated messages twice a day to remind Carly that he loved her and that she was a wonderful wife and mother.

Those seemingly ordinary habits now carry an entirely different weight.

“I know the girls will never stop missing him,” Carly said, adding that Spencer “will forever be their hero.”

Questions remain over the drowning

The circumstances surrounding Spencer’s death remain under investigation, although authorities have not indicated that they suspect foul play.

His death has also drawn attention to swimming conditions around Shelter Island. Local reporting following the incident highlighted warnings about strong tides and currents in the East End’s open waters, even when conditions on the surface may not appear particularly threatening.

For Carly, however, Sunday was less about how Spencer died than about remembering how he lived.

The accomplished athlete known publicly for triathlon and wellness was, to his family, the man who left love notes around their home, surprised them simply because he could, and made sure his wife was reminded twice every day how much she meant to him.

The couple had imagined more children and many more years together. Instead, Carly stood before friends and relatives only four days after Spencer’s death trying to put an unimaginable loss into words.

She could not make sense of why the life they had created — one she described as filled with happiness and love — had disappeared so suddenly.

For a couple who had always joked that even forever would not be enough time together, that phrase has now become one of Carly’s most poignant memories of the husband she says was the love of her life.
