Former Team USA Triathlete Spencer Korwin Dies During Family Vacation on Shelter Island

A family vacation on New York’s Shelter Island ended in tragedy when Spencer Korwin, a 38-year-old Manhattan father of two and former Team USA triathlete, failed to return from a morning swim near the hotel where he was staying with his wife and young daughters.

After an extensive search involving local emergency crews, police divers and the U.S. Coast Guard, Korwin was found underwater near the same dock from which he had entered Shelter Island Sound hours earlier.

Police believe his death was accidental and say there is no indication of criminal activity, although the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office is still responsible for determining the official cause and manner of death.

A morning swim turns into an hours-long search

Korwin was vacationing with his family on Shelter Island when he went swimming on the morning of Wednesday, September 2.

According to police, he entered the waters of Shelter Island Sound-North Channel near Crescent Beach at approximately 8 a.m. The family was staying at The Pridwin Hotel, and Korwin reportedly began his swim from a dock near the property.

Several hours passed without his return. His wife eventually alerted hotel staff, who contacted emergency services. Authorities received the report of a missing swimmer at approximately 12:03 p.m.

What followed was a major search operation involving the Shelter Island Police Department, Shelter Island Fire Department and local emergency medical personnel.

Additional assistance came from fire departments in East Marion, Greenport, Southold and Orient, along with the Southold police dive team and drone unit. U.S. Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews also participated in the search.

Divers ultimately located Korwin underwater near the dock where he had begun his swim. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to local reports, he was found at around 3 p.m., roughly seven hours after he had entered the water.

Conditions that morning were not considered unusual

The circumstances have been particularly difficult for those who knew Korwin because of his extensive athletic background and experience in the water.

John Lippert, co-owner of Manhattan training facility SportsLab and a longtime friend of Korwin, told Newsday that Korwin was a strong swimmer.

“He was a great swimmer,” Lippert said, adding that this was why his death came as such a shock to those close to him.

Officials have also said there was nothing obviously abnormal about the weather that morning.

Southold Town Police Department Marine One master John Kirincic said there was no fog or other noticeably poor weather when Korwin disappeared.

Nevertheless, local officials emphasized that open water around Shelter Island can present challenges even when conditions appear calm. Tides, currents and boat traffic must always be considered, Shelter Island Police Chief Jim Read said, although the waters near The Pridwin are not generally regarded as an unusually dangerous location.

Police currently describe the incident as accidental in nature and say criminality is not suspected. The medical examiner’s investigation remains pending.

From Team USA triathlete to fitness entrepreneur

Korwin had spent much of his adult life immersed in athletics, training and wellness.

He graduated from Syracuse University in 2010 before competing internationally as a triathlete.

In 2012, he qualified for Team USA Triathlon through the Age Group National Championships and traveled to Auckland, New Zealand, to represent the United States at the Age-Group Triathlon World Championships.

Official World Triathlon records show Korwin competed in the men’s 20–24 sprint age group in Auckland on October 22, 2012, finishing 36th with a time of 1:20:43.

His athletic career later became the foundation for his professional work.

SportsLab NYC describes Korwin as someone who had been involved in fitness throughout his life. He joined SportsLab in 2013 and worked with clients on strength and balance after his own years of competition. The facility also identifies him as a former Team USA triathlete and Gatorade-sponsored athlete.

Korwin eventually founded Korwin Health & Wellness, building a business around personalized fitness and holistic health.

The company describes its approach as combining diagnostics, training, nutrition, recovery and individualized performance programs designed around clients’ lifestyles and goals.

According to his professional profile, Korwin also ran an outdoor summer camp for children in Southampton during the summer of 2020.

Friends remember a devoted family man

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, friends described Korwin as someone whose life had increasingly centered on his family.

He and his wife had two daughters, ages 4 and 1.

Lippert said Korwin established his own wellness business in part because the flexibility allowed him to devote more time to being a father and husband.

He also remembered Korwin as a natural outdoorsman who enjoyed activities including boating, camping, kayaking, skiing, surfing and fishing — someone friends trusted when they wanted to introduce their own children to the outdoors.

A fundraising page established to support Korwin’s wife and daughters described him as a deeply loved husband, father, son, brother and friend.

“He was the sun around which so many of our lives orbited,” the tribute said, adding that his absence was being felt deeply by those who knew him.

Tragedy brings renewed attention to open-water safety

Korwin’s death also prompted renewed warnings from Shelter Island residents and authorities about the unpredictability of the surrounding waters.

Local resident Laurie Eckardt noted that visitors may not always be familiar with conditions around the island.

Chief Read similarly stressed that swimmers entering open water must account for tides, currents and passing boats even in areas that are not normally considered hazardous.

Those warnings have taken on added significance because Korwin was not an inexperienced recreational swimmer. He had competed internationally and spent years building a career around athletic performance — making the circumstances of his death particularly difficult for friends and colleagues to comprehend.

For now, investigators have not identified evidence of criminal activity, and authorities continue to treat what happened as an apparent accidental drowning while awaiting the medical examiner’s final determination.

Family and friends prepare to say goodbye

Family and friends are scheduled to gather in Manhattan on Sunday, September 6, to remember Korwin.

His funeral service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Temple Israel on East 75th Street, followed by burial at Beth Moses Jewish Cemetery in West Babylon.

Korwin leaves behind his wife, two young daughters and a community that knew him not only as a former Team USA competitor, but also as a trainer, entrepreneur, outdoorsman and devoted father.

What began as an ordinary morning swim during a family getaway ultimately became an hours-long search and a devastating loss — one that has left those closest to Korwin mourning a man whose personal and professional life had been built around fitness, family and the outdoors.
