MOTHER AND DAUGHTER FOUND D*AD AFTER A FIVE-MINUTE DRIVE TO A HIKING TRAIL — NOW HER BROTHER REVEALS THE CHILLING WAY THEIR FAMILY REALISED SOMETHING WAS TERRIBLY WRONG!

Brother Recalls Final Walk of Mother and Daughter Found Dead in Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack

A woman and a girl.

A British Columbia family has shared heartbreaking memories of a mother and daughter found dead near a familiar hiking trail, as wildlife officers investigate whether a grizzly bear was responsible for the tragedy.

Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her youngest daughter, Selah Reed, 20, disappeared after heading out for a walk near Bella Coola on Saturday, October 31.

The two women were reported missing the following day when they failed to return home. Jennifer’s body was discovered on Monday, November 2, while Selah was found dead on Tuesday afternoon.

Their deaths have shaken relatives and the local community, particularly because the pair were experienced outdoors enthusiasts who regularly spent time together.

Brother Describes Agonising Wait for News

Jennifer’s brother, Josh Balcarras, has spoken about the family’s growing concern as hours passed without any contact from the missing women.

At first, the silence was measured in hours. Then an entire day passed, followed by another night without answers.

Josh told CBC that the experience felt almost impossible to comprehend, describing the unfolding tragedy as surreal.

What made the disappearance especially alarming was the ordinary nature of the outing.

The mother and daughter had been walking along the Snooka West Trail, approximately five minutes by car from their home.

According to Josh, the route was familiar to them and was not situated in an isolated wilderness area.

He described the outing as an everyday walk, rather than an ambitious expedition into unfamiliar terrain.

Yet that routine trip would become the last time the two women were known to have gone out together.

Mother and Daughter Shared an Extraordinary Bond

Relatives have remembered Jennifer and Selah as exceptionally close, with overlapping interests and a shared enthusiasm for nature.

Josh described the pair as being almost inseparable.

Whenever Jennifer went hiking, he recalled, Selah was usually right beside her.

Their relationship extended beyond outdoor activities.

Both enjoyed creative pursuits, and family members said they shared similar personalities and interests.

Jennifer, a mother of four and grandmother, loved books, music, painting and spending time outdoors.

Her younger brother Matthew Balcarras recalled how she expressed her artistic talents through murals painted in family homes, including those belonging to her children and relatives.

He described her as an important presence at the centre of the family.

Selah was remembered as gentle, quiet and kind, with a passion for ballet, art and hiking.

At just 20, she was working as an education assistant while pursuing studies through Athabasca University’s online program.

Her family said she had only begun exploring the possibilities of adult life.

Jennifer Had Recently Started a New Career

Before the tragedy, Jennifer had moved to Bella Coola to pursue new professional opportunities.

She worked as an art therapist and had joined the local school community as a counsellor in August 2026.

The Central Coast Teachers’ Association paid tribute to her dedication, highlighting the time she spent connecting with students and supporting their emotional well-being.

Although she had been part of the school community for only a short period, colleagues said her compassion and commitment had made a meaningful impression.

Her sudden death has left a significant void among the students and staff she worked with.

A fundraising campaign established by relative Mary Melissa Smith described Jennifer as someone building a new future for herself and her family.

The fundraiser aims to support her three surviving adult children and grandchild following the unexpected loss.

It also honours Selah, whose life and ambitions were cut tragically short.

Conservation Officers Set Traps as Investigation Continues

The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service has launched an investigation into the suspected fatal wildlife encounter.

Inspector Jeff Tyre confirmed that officers were examining evidence indicating a possible grizzly bear attack.

Authorities have deployed trapping equipment in the area as they attempt to locate any animal potentially involved.

At the time of the CBC report, no bears had been captured.

Officials said any captured animals would be assessed to determine whether they were connected to the deaths.

If investigators establish that a particular bear was responsible, it may be euthanized in accordance with provincial wildlife conflict response guidelines.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the exact circumstances of the women’s deaths or the number of bears that may have been involved.

The investigation remains active.

Community Confronts Another Wildlife Tragedy

The suspected attack has revived painful memories in Bella Coola, where a separate grizzly bear incident injured a group of children and teachers in November 2025.

Several people were critically injured during that earlier encounter on a trail south of Highway 20.

The latest tragedy has again raised concerns about public safety in an area where people and large wildlife share the surrounding landscape.

The Nuxalk Nation acknowledged the emotional impact of the deaths on the victims’ relatives and the wider community.

Elected Chief Samuel Schooner said the incident would also be deeply distressing for those affected by the previous year’s bear attack.

The Nation directed residents and journalists to conservation officers for official updates while the circumstances remained under investigation.

There has been no reported evidence connecting the latest deaths to the animal involved in the 2025 incident.

Family Remembers Two Lives Lost Together

As conservation officers continue their work, Jennifer and Selah’s relatives are focusing on the lives and memories of the two women.

Jennifer was remembered as a creative, devoted mother who had recently embraced a fresh beginning.

Selah was a young woman pursuing her education and career while sharing many of her mother’s passions.

Their close relationship has become one of the most poignant aspects of the tragedy.

For Josh, the memory of Selah accompanying Jennifer on her hikes captures the bond they shared.

The women had set out together on a familiar trail, expecting nothing more than an ordinary walk close to home.

Instead, their family is now mourning two loved ones while awaiting answers about what happened in the final hours of their lives.
