Ohio Doctor Who Studied Violent Adolescents Killed in Alleged Plot Involving Her 18-Year-Old Daughter

An Ohio doctor who once co-authored an academic paper examining violent and homicidal adolescents was fatally shot inside her own home — and authorities now allege her 18-year-old daughter, the daughter’s boyfriend and his roommate were involved in a plan to kill her.
Tamela D. Dutcher, 55, died after being shot at her home on Bean-Oller Road in Delaware County shortly after midnight on Aug. 14, 2026. Her daughter, Bryanna Dutcher, 18, along with Christian Evans, 20, and Dajameous Payne, 21, have since been indicted on aggravated murder charges. Bryanna also faces an obstruction of justice charge.
The allegations remain unproven, and the case is moving through the Ohio court system.
Investigators Say an Argument Earlier That Day Preceded the Shooting
According to court records and probable-cause documents, Bryanna told investigators that she and her mother had argued earlier on Aug. 14 about cleaning and household chores. She later contacted Evans, whom authorities identified as her boyfriend, to vent about the dispute.
Investigators allege that what began as an argument later developed into something far more serious.
Recovered messages described in court records are among the evidence authorities say points to advance planning. Prosecutors allege Evans and Payne later traveled to the Dutcher residence, while communications between Evans and Bryanna discussed what would happen after her parents were gone. One recovered message attributed to Evans stated that the plan had to be “perfect.”
Bryanna reportedly told investigators that her parents did not know she was dating Evans. According to an affidavit, she claimed she had kept the relationship secret because she believed her parents were “very racist” and would force her to leave the home if they discovered she was dating a Black man. That assertion is Bryanna’s account to investigators and has not been independently established as fact.
Two Men Allegedly Entered the Home After Midnight

Authorities allege Evans and Payne arrived at the Dutcher home in Evans’ Camaro on the night of the shooting.
According to investigators, the two men entered the residence and Tamela was shot while inside the home. Her husband heard the gunfire and rushed to help her. Authorities allege another shot was fired toward him but missed before the two men fled.
A 911 call was placed shortly after midnight reporting that Tamela had been shot. Emergency personnel transported her to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
The investigation quickly turned toward people connected to the family.
Deleted Messages Became a Key Part of the Investigation

Bryanna was initially arrested on an obstruction of justice charge.
Investigators alleged that she repeatedly gave misleading information about what she knew, delaying efforts to identify suspects. But the case against her changed as detectives examined digital evidence.
Authorities recovered deleted messages from her phone that prosecutors say appeared to show planning before the shooting. Surveillance footage and location information were also cited in probable-cause affidavits detailing the investigation.
Evans and Payne were initially charged with murder, while prosecutors subsequently added a murder charge against Bryanna. A Delaware County grand jury then indicted all three on aggravated murder on Aug. 20.
The indictment alleges the three acted purposely and with prior calculation and design.
Tamela Dutcher’s Earlier Research Adds a Striking Detail

One aspect of the case has drawn particular attention because of Tamela Dutcher’s professional past.
In January 2002, Dutcher and Daniel Davis co-authored an article titled “The violent and homicidal adolescent. Hearts darkened before time,” published in the International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health.
The paper examined youth violence and homicide. Among its observations was that although the overwhelming majority of young people arrested for homicide were male, the relatively small number of female offenders tended to target members of their own families.
More than two decades later, prosecutors are now accusing Dutcher’s own teenage daughter of participating in a calculated plan that resulted in her mother’s death.
The parallel is striking, but the academic paper itself has no established connection to the alleged motive in the current case.
Three Defendants Now Face Aggravated Murder Charges

Evans, Payne and Bryanna are being held in the Delaware County Jail as the case proceeds.
Evans and Payne appeared for separate arraignments on Aug. 21. Bryanna’s arraignment was scheduled for Aug. 24. The aggravated murder indictments replaced the earlier preliminary-hearing process.
During Evans’ arraignment, his attorney, Carlos Crawford, told the court he intended to pursue a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and seek an evaluation of Evans’ competency. Crawford said Evans had a significant mental-health history and argued that his condition had declined while in jail.
The judge maintained Evans’ $3 million bond and, at that stage, scheduled a final pretrial for Oct. 5 and trial for Oct. 20.
The prosecution’s case is still at the allegation stage. None of the three defendants has been convicted in Tamela Dutcher’s death, and the evidence cited by investigators will ultimately have to be tested through the court process.
