A wounded 6-year-old boy managed to escape a Louisiana home and seek help from neighbors after an attack that left four members of his family dead, authorities and relatives said.

Kaegan Jude Solet, 47, has since been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the Sept. 12 incident in Houma, about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans.

The victims were identified by a relative as Verna Mae Verdin, her children Letha Verret and Paul Verret, and Paul’s partner, Krissy Lynn Parfait.

But amid the devastating loss, relatives say the actions of the youngest survivor may have been crucial in alerting others that something was terribly wrong.

The 6-year-old had been spending the night with his grandmother Letha and great-grandmother Verna when the incident unfolded.

Despite suffering multiple injuries, the child was able to get out of the home and seek assistance from neighbors.

“He knew he was injured and he was just worried about making sure someone knew his family was in trouble,” relative Brandon Thiel said.

Authorities located the boy near the residence before discovering the four adults inside.

The child was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. His father later shared an update saying his son was stable and described him as “so strong” and “such a fighter.”

Relatives have since referred to the boy as a “superhero.”

Verdin, a great-grandmother, was reportedly just two weeks away from retiring from her job at a Walmart bakery.

She lived in the main house with her daughter Letha, while Paul and Parfait were staying in a camper behind the residence.

Letha was the mother of seven children, including three minors. Family members said her children are now facing the loss of their mother, grandmother and uncle at the same time.

Paul and Parfait were remembered by relatives as an inseparable couple who regularly spent holidays and family gatherings together.

A fundraiser was established to help the family with funeral costs and the hardships created by the tragedy.

Investigators said Solet knew the victims. According to a relative, he had fathered a child with a member of the family.

Authorities launched a manhunt following the discovery and located Solet at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

He was initially taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

After being released Tuesday, Solet was taken into custody and formally booked on four first-degree murder charges and one attempted first-degree murder charge.

A photograph released by authorities showed him being escorted by officers while wearing hospital scrubs with his left arm in a cast.

He was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex and was being held without bond.

Authorities have not publicly established the precise time the incident began or disclosed a motive.

Investigators are asking people living in the area to review surveillance or doorbell-camera footage recorded between 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday for anything that could assist the investigation.

Solet had previously been arrested in connection with two separate violent cases in Houma.

In 2019, he was charged after the death of Kemple Paul Scott Lovell, but a grand jury declined to indict him because of insufficient evidence.

Paul Verret was found dead at his home in Houma.

Later that year, Solet was charged with attempted murder in a separate motel-room attack involving a 59-year-old woman. Prosecutors presented surveillance footage and DNA evidence during that case, but Solet was found not guilty in November 2023.

Those earlier cases did not result in convictions and are separate from the current allegations.

The new charges remain allegations, and the current case has not yet been adjudicated.

For the Verret family, however, attention is also centered on the young survivor still recovering in the hospital — a 6-year-old who, according to his relatives, was injured himself but remained focused on getting outside and making sure someone knew his family needed help.
