Egyptian TV Host Sarah Khalifa Breaks Down in Court as She Receives Death Sentence in Major Drug Case

Egyptian television personality Sarah Khalifa broke down in court after receiving a death sentence in a major drug trafficking case that involved 28 defendants and the seizure of more than 1,600 pounds of narcotics.
The 39-year-old former host of the Egyptian crime program “Mission Impossible” was sentenced to death by hanging alongside 11 other defendants in Cairo. Khalifa, who has more than 2 million followers on social media, has strongly denied the allegations against her.
As the sentence was delivered, Khalifa made an emotional appeal to officials.
“Please listen to me, sir. My parents raised me well; they are people who pray, and I don’t need drug money,” she said, according to Al Jazeera.

Khalifa has maintained her innocence throughout the case. During questioning, she reportedly sought to distance herself from drugs entirely, telling investigators that she had “never smoked a cigarette in my life.”
Before becoming the focus of the high-profile criminal proceedings, Khalifa had built a public career in television and business. She became known for her work on “Mission Impossible,” a crime-focused program, and also ran a cosmetic surgery clinic and an event-planning company.
Her arrest came in 2025 as Egyptian authorities investigated what they described as a large organized drug operation.

According to Egyptian state media, prosecutors accused Khalifa and other defendants of participating in an organized gang that imported raw materials used to manufacture synthetic drugs.
Authorities alleged that members of the operation produced and stored the substances inside residential properties.
The investigation ultimately resulted in 28 people being charged. More than 1,600 pounds of narcotics were seized during the case, while investigators also recovered unlicensed firearms and ammunition, according to state media.
Khalifa was arrested in April 2025 in an upscale area of Cairo on suspicion of drug-related offenses.
Despite the prosecution’s case, she continued to reject the allegations and maintained that she had no reason to become involved in the illegal drug trade.
Twelve Defendants Receive Death Sentences
Khalifa was not the only defendant to receive the most severe sentence available under Egyptian law.
She and 11 others were sentenced to death following their convictions. Nine other defendants received life sentences, while seven were acquitted.
The sentencing followed a required step in Egypt’s legal process for capital cases: consultation with the country’s Grand Mufti.
Before a death sentence can be issued, the court refers the relevant case papers to the Grand Mufti for a religious opinion. Khalifa’s case had previously been referred to the Grand Mufti by the Cairo Criminal Court.
The court subsequently issued its judgment against Khalifa and the other defendants.
A Dramatic Fall From Her Public Life
The case has attracted particular attention because of Khalifa’s highly visible career before her arrest.
Beyond her television work, she had cultivated a sizable social-media following and was involved in businesses outside broadcasting. Her best-known television role was on “Mission Impossible,” a program centered on crime — making her appearance as a defendant in such a major criminal proceeding particularly striking.
Images from before her arrest showed a very different public life, including travel and appearances in glamorous locations. By September 2026, however, Khalifa was standing before a Cairo court facing the gravest possible legal consequences.
Her emotional response during sentencing underscored her continued rejection of the prosecution’s allegations.
The Case Is Not Necessarily Over
Although Khalifa has now received a death sentence, the judgment does not necessarily mark the end of the legal process.
According to Al Jazeera, the verdict can be appealed under recent changes to Egypt’s judicial system. That leaves further legal proceedings possible before the case reaches its final conclusion.
For now, Khalifa remains one of 12 defendants sentenced to death in the case, while nine others face life imprisonment and seven have been cleared.
The former television host continues to deny the allegations, with her tearful courtroom plea — insisting that she did not need money from drugs and invoking the way her parents raised her — emerging as one of the most striking moments of the sentencing.
