A 17-year-old student was arrested after a disturbing confrontation with her teacher inside a Brazilian high school escalated into an attack captured on classroom video.

The incident took place on September 11 at Dr. Gerson dos Santos State School in Cametá, in the state of Pará. The teacher, Betânia de Almeida, survived and was later released from hospital after receiving treatment.

Classroom Video Captures Sudden Confrontation

Footage from the classroom shows the teenager standing close to de Almeida’s desk while the room appears otherwise empty.

Moments later, the student suddenly produced a knife and moved toward the teacher. De Almeida reacted quickly, avoiding the initial attack and struggling with the teenager as she attempted to get control of the weapon. The footage also shows another attempt coming dangerously close to the teacher’s face.

De Almeida eventually managed to escape the classroom, but the student followed her into the hallway.

Police arrested the 11th-grade student at the school.

According to a Pará Civil Police report cited in the original account, the teenager told officers that she attacked de Almeida because she disliked the teacher. A family member separately said the confrontation happened after de Almeida had finished grading the student’s mathematics exam.

Because the student is 17, her identity has not been released.

Teacher Released From Hospital

De Almeida was taken to Cametá Regional Hospital, where doctors treated her injuries with stitches.

The school said a CT scan found that the wound had not damaged any organs, and the teacher was discharged from the hospital on Saturday.

Questions remain over what legal consequences the teenager could face.

Cametá lawyer Thays Cruz explained that because the suspect is a minor, the case is handled under Brazil’s Statute of the Child and Adolescent. Cruz said an infraction comparable to attempted homicide could result in a socio-educational measure that may include confinement.

The Union of Public Education Workers of Pará condemned the incident and called for authorities to investigate, saying that violence directed at education affects society as a whole.
