Prince Harry and Meghan Begin a New Chapter in Britain

Six years after leaving the UK and stepping back from royal duties, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have now returned to England with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The family flew privately from California and arrived in Britain on August 26, just days after their plans for an extended stay became public.

The move marks a striking change from Harry’s own public position in 2025, when he said he could not imagine bringing his wife and children back to the UK because of security concerns. Yet the family has now begun settling into a new arrangement in Harry’s home country—one that remains firmly separate from official royal life.

A return, but not a return to royal duties

Harry and Meghan are expected to remain in Britain for an extended period, with Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, enrolled in British schools ahead of the September term. Reports indicate that the family will live at a private, non-royal residence outside London, with the Cotswolds widely reported as their likely base. They are also expected to retain their California home.

The couple will not resume their former roles as working royals. Their return therefore represents a family relocation rather than a restoration of their previous position within the monarchy.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, is also expected to remain in Los Angeles, meaning the family’s move does not represent a complete break with their life in California.

The timing follows a family visit to the UK in July, when Harry, Meghan and their children spent time with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove. The Sussexes also visited Althorp, the Spencer family’s Northamptonshire estate and the childhood home of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.

A decision that once seemed almost impossible

The significance of the move becomes clearer when viewed against Harry’s previous comments about returning to Britain.

In May 2025, the Duke of Sussex told the BBC that he could not see a situation in which he would bring Meghan and their children back to the UK at that point, citing concerns over their security.

At the same time, however, Harry made clear that he still wanted a reconciliation with his family.

“I would love reconciliation with my family,” he said at the time, adding that he saw little point in continuing the conflict and expressing concern about how much time his father had.

More than a year later, the Sussex family is now back in Britain.

The royal family dynamic remains complicated

Harry and Meghan’s return inevitably puts their relationships with other members of the royal family under renewed attention.

Harry’s relationship with King Charles has shown signs of improvement, particularly following their meeting at Highgrove in July. His relationship with his older brother, Prince William, has remained far more strained. The move also raises questions about how much contact Archie and Lilibet will have with members of their extended family now that they are living in Britain for an extended period.

For now, however, there has been no announcement suggesting that Harry and Meghan are seeking to return to official royal duties. Their status remains that of non-working members of the royal family.

The couple’s return also comes with unresolved questions surrounding Harry’s security arrangements. After stepping away from royal duties, his level of publicly funded protection was reduced, leading to a prolonged legal dispute with the UK government. A British court ultimately rejected his challenge to the decision.

Whether those arrangements will change now that the Sussexes are spending considerably more time in Britain remains unclear.

Despite the turbulence surrounding their relationship with the royal family, Meghan has continued to share glimpses of the Sussexes’ private family life through social media.

In July 2026, she posted photographs from the family’s summer holiday, including images of Archie and Lilibet enjoying time at Althorp and a family day at the beach.

In May 2026, the family visited Disneyland with Doria Ragland, where Lilibet met Cinderella. Easter that year brought an egg hunt and egg decorating, while International Women’s Day featured a photograph of Meghan and Lilibet together.

She also marked Father’s Day that year with a montage of Harry with their children, including moments of him dancing with Archie, teaching him to ride a bicycle and cuddling with both children.

The family’s connection to Britain, meanwhile, has remained visible despite their years in California. In 2019, Harry and Meghan took three-month-old Archie on their royal tour of South Africa, where they met Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Now, six years after leaving the country, Archie and Lilibet are preparing to experience Britain not as visitors, but as children beginning school there.
