“Utterly compelling” and “binge-worthy” period drama with 100% score gets new UK streaming home
A period drama boasting a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating and several awards is now streaming in full on Amazon Prime Video.
A Place to Call Home is set in 1950s Australia and follows nurse Sarah Adams (Marta Dusseldorp), who returns down under after 20 years abroad.
She becomes entangled in the wealthy Bligh family and their scandalous secrets, with the show following Sarah as she tries to navigate her new home, her dark past, and clashing with wealthy matriarch Elizabeth Bligh (Noni Hazlehurst).
The cast also included Brett Climo, Craig Hall, David Berry, Abby Earl, Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood, Aldo Mignone, Sara Wiseman, Jenni Baird, Tim Draxl, and Frankie J. Holden.
It was initially cancelled after two seasons, but managed to secure extra funding and instead culminated in a sixth season in 2018.
A Place to Call Home was beloved by fans and critics alike, picking up several award nominations throughout its run and bagging a Logie Award and an Australian Cinematographers Society Award.

It holds a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, with several fans also branding it one of the best TV series they’d ever seen.
In their review, The Guardian said: “This is not a meat pie and gravy offering from the makers of Packed to the Rafters, but a top-drawer period drama with all the trimmings.”
The Wall Street Journal wrote: “For all its dark dimensions, A Place to Call Home is roughly what the title suggests-a captivatingly filmed, deeply romantic drama of immense intelligence distinguished by a uniformly superb cast.”
The San Francisco Chronicle labelled it “utterly compelling”, while The Australian said it was “witty and stylish.”
The Silver Petticoat Review called it “addicting”, adding: “A Place to Call Home is one of those period dramas that sucks you into its world of characters, drama, and mystery. By the end, you’ll feel like you know these people and just want to spend more time with each and every one of them.”
Speaking to Parade in 2016, Dusseldorp explained what drew her to the role of Sarah: “As the world gets smaller and smaller, we have stories we share, and it’s a trade between our cultures.
“The thing that drew her to me the most was the extraordinary experience she’d had. I happened to know the late director. He said to me, she’s had a past.
“It was an enormous responsibility to try to bring her full experience to the screen, and I took that very seriously. A full experience that included revealing her past as a convert to Judaism and survivor of a Nazi concentration camp.”
