Wolves Legend Mike Bailey Dies Aged 84 as Tributes Pour In for Beloved Captain

Wolves have been left mourning the loss of club legend Mike Bailey, who has died at the age of 84.
The former midfielder spent 11 years at Molineux and became one of the defining figures of the club’s revival during the 1960s and 1970s. He also represented England twice in 1964.
In a statement, Wolves paid tribute to Bailey’s leadership and his enormous contribution to the club.
“During that popular Wolves stint, Bailey was known by those on the Molineux terraces for his love of a tackle, creative passing and eye for the occasional spectacular strike, but more than all that, his leadership,” the club said.
A Leader Through Wolves’ Revival
Bailey played a major role in Wolves’ return to the top division during his first full season with the club, helping them secure promotion in 1967.
His performances that season also earned him the Midlands Player of the Year award.
Back in the top flight, Bailey remained a key part of the side and helped Wolves reach the UEFA Cup final in 1972.
The all-English final against Tottenham Hotspur ended in disappointment, with Wolves losing 3-2.
Two years later, however, Bailey would lift silverware at Wembley.
As captain, he led Wolves to a 2-1 League Cup victory over Manchester City at the old Wembley Stadium — a triumph the club described as his “finest afternoon at the club.”
From England International to Manager
Bailey earned two England caps during his playing career, both coming in 1964.
He eventually retired from football in 1979 after spells with Minnesota Kicks in America and Hereford.
His involvement in the game did not end there. Bailey went on to manage several clubs, including Hereford, Charlton, Brighton, Greek side OFI and Leatherhead.
Bailey was diagnosed with dementia in 2020.
He died at the age of 84, prompting an outpouring of tributes from supporters and former clubs.
One Wolves fan wrote: “Rest well captain.”

Another said: “So sorry to hear of the passing of Mike Bailey. Just before my time supporting Wolves.
“But everyone tells me he was as tough as they came and an inspirational leader. Thoughts with his family and friends.”
A third supporter added: “Just hearing the very Sad news of the passing of the Great Mike Bailey sending my Deepest Condolences to his Family and friends at this sad time.”
Charlton Athletic also paid tribute, saying: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player and promotion-winning Manager Mike Bailey at the age of 84.”
For Wolves supporters, Bailey leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his footballing ability, but by the leadership and determination that made him such a beloved figure at Molineux.
