Viewers Watched in Horror as Two Journalists Were Killed During a Live TV Broadcast

A routine morning television report in Virginia turned into a devastating tragedy when reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were killed while broadcasting live.

Alison, 24, and Adam, 27, were working for local station WDBJ7 when they were covering a tourism story at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, near Smith Mountain Lake.

Alison was interviewing Vicki Gardner of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce when the broadcast was suddenly interrupted by the sound of gunfire.

The camera fell to the ground as the horrifying incident unfolded, while viewers heard Alison’s screams before the live transmission ended.

Authorities identified the suspect as Vester Lee Flanagan II, who had previously worked for the television station under the professional name Bryce Williams.

Flanagan had been dismissed from the station in 2013 following concerns about his behaviour.

After the attack, he reportedly fled the scene and later died after turning the weapon on himself.

The incident triggered a major police response, with the station placed under lockdown while authorities searched for the suspect.

Investigators later received a lengthy fax from someone claiming to be Flanagan. The document attempted to explain his motives and referred to the Charleston church massacre earlier that year.

Authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.

For Alison’s fiancé, WDBJ7 anchor Chris Hurst, the tragedy was particularly devastating.

The couple had recently moved in together and had been building plans for their future.

In an emotional statement following Alison’s death, Chris revealed that they had been deeply in love and had hoped to get married.

He described Alison as radiant and spoke about how much she loved her family.

Her death left colleagues, friends and viewers across the country mourning a young journalist whose career was only beginning.

Adam was also remembered by those at WDBJ7 as a dedicated cameraman who was simply doing his job that morning.

Vicki Gardner, who had been taking part in the interview, survived the attack but suffered serious injuries.

She focused instead on finding something positive each day and moving forward.
