Donald Trump Says He Is ‘Happy’ Harry and Meghan Have Returned to Britain — “I Wouldn’t Have Taken Them Back”
Donald Trump has delivered a blunt verdict on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain, saying he is “happy” the couple have left the United States — while making clear that he would not have welcomed them back into the Royal Family.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on September 2, 2026, Trump was asked about Harry and Meghan’s decision to return to the UK after six years in the US.
His response was unequivocal.
“I’m happy about it. I was not a fan,” Trump said.
He went on to praise his longstanding relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles, before accusing the Sussexes of showing what he described as “great disrespect” toward the Royal Family.
Trump: “I wouldn’t have taken them back”
Trump said he had known Charles for many years, both when he was Prince Charles and since he became King.
“I had a very good relationship with the Queen. Really good,” he said, adding that he also had “a really good relationship with King Charles”.
Describing the King as a “great, great guy”, Trump then turned his attention to Harry and Meghan.
“I thought they treated the Royal Family with great disrespect,” he said.
“I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles.”
Trump went further, saying: “If I were in the royal family I would not have taken him back.”
The comments came just days after Harry, Meghan and their children returned to Britain following years of living in California.
A long-running criticism of the Sussexes
Trump’s latest remarks are not the first time he has criticised Harry and Meghan.
When the couple were preparing to leave the UK for North America in 2020, questions arose over who would pay for their security. Trump made his position clear at the time, saying the Sussexes would have to pay for their own protection rather than relying on the US government.
He later continued to speak critically about Harry’s relationship with his family.
In 2021, Trump told Nigel Farage that he believed Harry’s marriage had damaged his relationship with his family and said the situation hurt the Queen.
The following year, Trump made another highly personal comment about Harry and Meghan during an interview with Piers Morgan.
Harry’s US visa controversy
Trump’s criticism resurfaced again in 2024, when Harry became embroiled in a dispute over his US visa after acknowledging recreational drug use in his memoir, Spare.
Trump indicated at the time that he did not intend to take action against Harry over the matter, but nevertheless made clear that he had concerns about the Duke’s personal circumstances, saying he had “enough problems with his wife”.
His latest comments show that his negative view of the Sussexes has not changed.
Harry and Meghan begin a new life in Britain
Trump’s remarks come as Harry and Meghan settle into a very different chapter of their lives.
The couple returned to Britain last month with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, after spending six years in the United States.
The children have been enrolled in British schools and are due to begin this month.
Despite the move, Harry and Meghan are not returning as working royals. They stepped back from official royal duties in 2020 and will continue living as private individuals.
The family’s return has nevertheless placed the Sussexes back at the centre of attention in Britain, with their relationship with the wider Royal Family once again under intense scrutiny.
