A Texas mother fatally shot her 4-year-old daughter and then turned the gun on herself just hours after losing a custody battle with the child’s father, according to police and local reports.
Cibelle Savella, 35, was expected to hand her daughter, Vivian, over to her ex-husband, Aaron Savella, on Tuesday evening. Instead, police said she returned to her $824,000 Houston home, where she shot the little girl before shooting herself.
Houston Police Lieutenant Larry Crowson said a custody hearing had taken place earlier that day and had not gone well for the mother.
“There was a custody hearing earlier today that didn’t go well for the mother,” Crowson said.
“She came home, shot her 4-year-old, and then shot herself.”
Savella was initially taken to a hospital but died from her injuries the following day.
Custody Battle Ended Hours Before the Shooting

Savella, who was originally from Brazil, divorced Aaron in November 2024 after four years of marriage. Their divorce was followed by a contentious legal dispute over Vivian.
According to court filings cited by the Daily Mail, Savella had suffered another significant legal setback just eight hours before the murder-suicide.
The latest ruling restricted her from speaking Portuguese with Vivian unless a supervisor present during the interaction was able to speak the language.
She was also barred from attending her daughter’s school performances and extracurricular activities.

The ruling further ordered Savella to pay child support to her former husband and cover 50% of Vivian’s out-of-pocket medical expenses.
The precise reasons behind the custody decision and the strict restrictions placed on Savella were not immediately clear from the reports.
Family Says Vivian Was Loved Without Limit
Vivian’s surviving relatives described themselves as devastated by the little girl’s death.
“Vivian was 4 years old. She was loved without limit by her father, Aaron, and by everyone whose life she touched. There are no words for what has been taken from us,” the family said.
They also said Aaron had followed the legal process and complied with the court’s orders as he sought to protect his daughter.
“Aaron did everything the law asks of a parent who is trying to protect his child. He trusted the courts.
“He followed every order. He waited for the process to work. On Tuesday, a judge placed Vivian in his primary care, and she was supposed to come home to him that evening. She never did.”
‘I Have Never Experienced Anything Like This’
Charlotte Rainwater, the attorney who represented Aaron Savella, said the family was struggling to comprehend what had happened.
“The family is devastated by this outcome,” Rainwater told KHOU.
The lawyer, who has practiced family law for 28 years, said she had never encountered a case that ended this way.
“I’ve been practicing family law for 28 years and have never experienced anything like this.
“I don’t think anyone in this courtroom on Tuesday contemplated this could be the outcome.”
Vivian’s death came just hours after the custody ruling that was supposed to determine where she would live, leaving her father and other relatives to deal with the devastating aftermath.
