The Duke of Sussex delivered an emotional and candid virtual address to the NATO Military Committee at its headquarters in Brussels, drawing on his personal transition from active military service to civilian life and outlining how that emotional void laid the foundation for the Invictus Games.

Addressing senior allied military commanders via secure video link, Prince Harry, 42, recalled his previous appearance before the committee in October 2024, highlighting the enduring kinship between allied defense structures and the international veteran rehabilitation community:

“A great deal has changed since then. But what has not changed is the common ground between NATO and Invictus — and my belief that there is far more we can do together. Because at its heart, NATO is an alliance of nations. But those nations are defended by people. People who volunteer to serve. People who train together, deploy together, fight together and in many cases, recover together. And families who serve alongside them in ways that are rarely acknowledged. And ultimately, people who come home.”

Addressing the systemic imbalance between wartime deployment and post-service reintegration, the Duke laid bare his personal crisis upon concluding his ten-year career in the British Armed Forces:

“When I hung up my uniform, I felt as though I had lost not simply a profession, but part of my purpose and identity. I was fortunate; I had another way to serve. But Invictus is not just a sporting event. Sport is one of our tools. Our mission is much bigger. We rebuild purpose. We rebuild confidence. We strengthen families and communities. We connect veterans back into society.”

Harry emphasized that wounded, injured, and sick veterans continue to carry immense leadership capacity and moral authority, noting that military character remains etched in their blood and positions them as peerless role models for future generations.

Following the briefing, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, publicly commended the Duke and the Invictus Games Foundation delegation:

“Our veterans’ commitment does not end when the uniform comes off, and neither should our support. No soldier fights alone, and no veteran should recover alone.”
