Christa Pike remained alive after receiving two injections of pentobarbital during her scheduled execution in Tennessee on Wednesday night, prompting her attorneys to seek an emergency stay as the procedure took an unexpected turn.
Pike, 50, had been taken into the death chamber at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville shortly before 7:30 p.m. CDT on Sept. 30. Her execution was set to make her the first woman put to death in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
About an hour earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court had cleared the way for the execution to proceed by overruling a stay.
Witnesses heard Pike speaking from the gurney
Reporters and other witnesses observing the execution said Pike remained able to speak in full sentences during the procedure.
WKRN reporter Tori Gessner reported hearing Pike complain about discomfort in her arm.
“My arm feels like it’s about to bust. One spot is really throbbing,” Pike said, according to Gessner.
Pike was then administered two syringes containing pentobarbital, the drug being used for the execution.
But she remained alive.

As the situation unfolded inside the prison, Pike’s legal team quickly returned to court seeking emergency intervention.
Her attorneys filed an emergency request with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, arguing that the execution had not proceeded as expected.
“Ms. Pike has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat and is audibly snoring,” her attorneys wrote.
Emergency vehicles were also seen arriving at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution after the execution was halted.
The extraordinary development came only hours after the legal battle over Pike’s execution appeared to have reached its conclusion with the Supreme Court’s decision allowing Tennessee to proceed.
The situation remained a breaking and rapidly developing story at the time of the initial reports, with Pike’s condition and the next legal steps still unfolding.
