Todd Meadows spoke directly to his three young children about their futures in footage recorded aboard the Aleutian Lady — never knowing the message would become one of his final on-camera moments with them.

The 25-year-old deckhand’s final season was revisited during the Season 22 finale of Deadliest Catch, which aired Friday, September 25. Meadows died months earlier after falling overboard while the fishing vessel was operating approximately 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

The episode did not show the moment Meadows went overboard. Instead, it focused on his life aboard the boat, his relationship with his family and the crew’s experience surrounding the tragedy.

A Final FaceTime Call With His Children

Before the accident, cameras captured Meadows FaceTiming his family.

He was the father of three children, ages 1, 2 and 4, and admitted that being separated from them for long periods was one of the hardest parts of working at sea.

Meadows explained that his two youngest children were still too young to fully understand why their father disappeared for extended stretches.

During the call, he promised his son that they could go salmon fishing together once he returned home.

Then came an exchange that would take on heartbreaking significance months later.

His daughter urged him to stay safe while he was away. Meadows reassured her that he was being careful.

Meadows Recorded a Message About His Children’s Futures

Another emotional moment occurred when a producer interviewed Meadows while he was preparing food aboard the vessel.

He described the season as particularly difficult but said he would still return to the boat even if he had the opportunity to go home.

Fishing in Alaska had been one of his dreams, he explained, and his motivation was closely connected to providing for his family.

Then the producer asked Meadows what he wanted to say to his children.

On February 25, Meadows fell overboard from the Aleutian Lady while the vessel was operating in Alaskan waters.

His crewmates recovered him approximately 10 minutes later, according to information previously provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District.

Meadows was unresponsive.

Crew members attempted first aid and resuscitation, but they were unable to revive him.

His death certificate subsequently listed drowning with probable hypothermia as the cause of death. His death was ruled accidental.

Deadliest Catch Chose Not to Show the Fall

The season finale opened with a warning that some of its material could be disturbing to viewers.

However, the program did not broadcast footage of Meadows falling overboard.

Instead, the episode presented the tragedy largely through Captain Rick Shelford and the other crew members aboard the Aleutian Lady, while also including previously recorded moments of Meadows discussing his family and ambitions.

That decision placed particular emotional weight on the footage recorded before the accident.

Deckhand Glen “Steven” Porter became emotional while discussing Meadows during an on-camera interview.

According to Porter, Meadows cared so deeply about speaking with his children that he would risk getting into trouble aboard the vessel simply to make sure he could FaceTime them.

For Porter, that habit made Meadows’ priorities unmistakable.

Family remained at the center of his life even while he was hundreds of miles from shore working one of the most demanding jobs at sea.

When Meadows recorded his message to his children, there was no indication it would eventually be viewed as a farewell.

He expected to return home. He had talked about taking his son fishing. He was already considering coming back to the Aleutian Lady despite describing the season as one of the vessel’s roughest.
