‘SNL UK’ Satirizes Royal Drama and AI Anxieties with Rebellious Diana Chatbot, Roasting Ed Sheeran’s Neutrality
The cold open for Saturday Night Live UK’s latest broadcast (Season 2, Episode 2) delivered a razor-sharp collision of royal controversy, emerging AI anxieties, and music industry headlines. Set inside Buckingham Palace, the sketch depicts Larry Dean’s King Charles convening tech billionaires (portrayed by Celeste Dring and Freddie Meredith) to evaluate the societal threats of synthetic intelligence, only to be introduced to a cutting-edge operational model: an autonomous android dubbed D.I.A.N.A. (Deeply Intelligent Autonomous Neurokinetic Android).
Reprising his fan-favorite impersonation, cast member Jack Shep emerged in Princess Diana’s legendary off-the-shoulder “Revenge Dress.” The dialogue delivered an immediate institutional jab referencing Earl Charles Spencer’s incendiary memoir, with Dean’s King Charles remarking on his late ex-wife: “Well, as I allegedly said, she was soon forgotten.” Chaos escalated when the bot mirrored Diana’s famously independent spirit, systematically rejecting royal commands and triggering an imminent war between machines and humanity, prompting Charles to lament: “This was the problem last time!”
