Meghan Markle Spotted Driving Alone in the UK as New Security Review Gets Underway

Meghan Markle has been seen driving herself around the Cotswolds as she settles into a new chapter in Britain — at the same time that she is facing her first government-backed security review since stepping away from royal duties in 2020.

The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry have returned to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, after six years living in California. Their return has prompted the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) to commission separate risk assessments for both Meghan and Harry.

The development marks a significant moment for Meghan, whose security arrangements have been closely scrutinised since the couple stepped back from their roles as working royals.

Meghan receives first security assessment since 2020

According to PEOPLE, RAVEC — the independent Home Office committee responsible for determining eligibility for taxpayer-funded police protection — has commissioned a new risk assessment for Harry and a separate assessment for Meghan following their return to Britain.

The committee has also requested details of the couple’s schedules, including their regular journeys to take Archie and Lilibet to and from school. That information will form part of the assessment as RAVEC considers their current security arrangements.

For Meghan, this will be the first such risk assessment since she and Harry stepped down as working members of the Royal Family in 2020 and moved to the United States.

Harry, meanwhile, had already been subject to a Risk Management Board analysis in July 2026, although its conclusions had not yet been communicated to him at the time of the report.

The Sussexes have also been given interim security provision following their return to the UK.

Security has remained a major issue for Harry and Meghan

Security has been a longstanding point of contention since the Sussexes left royal life.

Harry lost his automatic police protection after stepping down from his royal role and has subsequently pursued legal action in an effort to have his UK security arrangements reinstated. His legal challenge was unsuccessful in February 2024, while an appeal was dismissed in May 2025.

Harry has previously argued that he did not feel comfortable bringing his wife and children to Britain without appropriate security arrangements.

That concern has taken on renewed importance now that the family is spending an extended period in the UK.

The couple’s schedules — including the children’s school journeys — are now among the information being considered as part of the latest assessment.

The Palace has maintained that operational security questions should be directed to the relevant police authorities rather than Buckingham Palace.

According to HELLO!, the Duchess was seen behind the wheel of a large SUV without Harry or the children accompanying her. The sighting came as the family continues establishing its new routine in the area.

The report described Meghan driving solo as an unusual sight, particularly because she has often been seen travelling with Harry or their children.

Her experience behind the wheel has also required an adjustment.

After years of driving in California, where motorists drive on the right-hand side of the road, Meghan reportedly received lessons from Harry to help her adapt to driving in Britain.
