King Charles’ Sandringham Cricket Pitch Set for £9,000 Upgrade After Princess Charlotte Shows Her Love of the Sport
Princess Charlotte’s enthusiasm for cricket has brought fresh attention to the sport at Sandringham, where a £9,000 upgrade is planned for the cricket pitch used by the local club.
Officials are seeking permission to install an all-weather artificial surface at the King’s Norfolk estate, creating a facility that can be used more consistently throughout the year.
A planning application has been submitted on behalf of Sandringham and Dersingham Cricket Club, which plays its matches at the estate.
The proposed upgrade is designed not only to improve the playing conditions but also to make the pitch more practical for both junior and senior members of the club.
Charlotte has already shown her cricket skills
The plans come after Princess Charlotte demonstrated her enthusiasm for cricket in a family video released in May to mark her 11th birthday.
In the footage, Charlotte was seen playing the sport on a sandy beach in Cornwall and showing off her bowling technique.
Her performance even caught the attention of former England captain Mike Atherton, who praised several aspects of her action.
Atherton noted her run-up, gather, straight arm and energetic follow-through, while also observing that she appeared to be enjoying herself.
Charlotte’s interest in the sport comes as no surprise given that cricket has also been enjoyed by members of her family.
King Charles has previously been photographed playing the game, including during a match in 2021 and while visiting Sri Lanka.
New facility will benefit the local community
The proposed artificial pitch is intended to provide a reliable surface in different weather conditions.
According to the planning application submitted to the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, the all-weather facility would increase the number of hours available for playing and training within the local community.
It would also help protect the existing natural turf square during periods of wet weather or heavy use.
The facility is planned for both junior and senior players at Dersingham Cricket Club, meaning the £9,000 project would serve a wider purpose beyond the Royal Family.
Sandringham is also home to the Waleses’ country residence
The cricket pitch forms part of the wider Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, an area closely associated with the Royal Family.
Prince William and Princess Catherine also have their country home, Anmer Hall, on the estate. The couple live there with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
For Charlotte, the planned improvement to the local cricket facilities could make it easier to enjoy a sport she has already shown an apparent enthusiasm for.
More importantly, the new all-weather surface is expected to give local players greater opportunities to train and compete while helping preserve the estate’s natural cricket square for the future.
