The tragic case came to light after the mother, Andrea Skopova, checked into a hospital in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, stating she had been 37 weeks pregnant and experiencing heavy bleeding.

Hospital Discovery: When medical staff examined her and realized she was no longer pregnant but no infant accompanied her, hospital personnel immediately contacted South Yorkshire Police.

The Grim Scene: Officers rushed to a residential property in the Wincobank area, where they discovered the newborn—referred to in court as “Baby S”—wrapped in a towel inside a bag on top of a washing machine in an outhouse. A forensic post-mortem revealed the baby suffered a total of 33 injuries, including 15 separate stab wounds.

Five defendants, all Slovak nationals, faced Sheffield Magistrates’ Court amidst intense public shock and scrutiny.

The Defendants: Andrea Skopova, 20, along with her partner Peter Horvath, 19, and his parents, Peter Horvath (38) and Nina Horvathova (37), were jointly charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice for allegedly attempting to clean and conceal the crime scene. A 15-year-old girl also appeared separately, charged solely with perverting the course of justice.
