Princess Anne’s Old Warning About Harry And Meghan Is Back In The Spotlight — And Her No-Nonsense Approach Could Now Help Shape Their Return To Royal Family Life

Years after Princess Anne cautioned the younger generation of royals against trying to “reinvent the wheel,” her remarks have taken on new significance as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle settle back in Britain for an extended stay.

Royal author Katie Nicholl now suggests that Anne may have understood earlier than most where the Sussexes’ decision could lead. Yet despite the tensions of recent years, Nicholl believes the Princess Royal may ultimately play a surprisingly constructive role if the family moves toward reconciliation.

Anne’s warning has taken on new meaning

In 2020, shortly after Harry and Meghan stepped back from their senior royal duties, Anne gave a rare interview about the younger generation and their approach to philanthropy.

Her message was characteristically direct: rather than constantly looking for new ways of doing things, younger royals should remember what had already worked.

Anne described herself as the “boring old fuddy-duddy at the back” reminding others not to forget the basics. She also cautioned against trying to “reinvent that particular wheel,” arguing that some established approaches existed for a reason.

Although she did not name Harry or Meghan, her comments came at a particularly significant moment, shortly after the couple had announced their withdrawal from royal duties.

Now, with the Sussexes reportedly returning to Britain, those remarks are being viewed in a very different light.

According to Katie Nicholl, Harry has historically maintained a strong relationship with his aunt, even though that relationship has been tested by the events of the past several years.

Nicholl believes Anne may have viewed the Sussexes’ American chapter with a degree of realism rather than surprise. More importantly, she suggests that the Princess Royal could still choose to extend a warm welcome if the opportunity for reconciliation arises.

That would be consistent with an earlier moment in 2022, when Harry arrived at Balmoral following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Harry recalled that Anne was there to greet him and asked whether he wanted to see her. Robert Hardman later reported that she hugged him and escorted him to the Queen’s bedroom so he could pay his respects.

For all the headlines surrounding the Sussexes, Anne’s actions have at times suggested that family ties remain important beneath the public disagreements.

The King could determine what happens next

Harry has previously spoken openly about wanting to repair his relationship with his family.

In 2025, he told BBC News that he wanted reconciliation and felt there was little point in continuing the conflict. At the same time, his relationship with Prince William remains strained, while reports have suggested that his connections with cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are no longer as close as they once were.

That makes King Charles particularly important.

Nicholl believes that when it comes to rebuilding family relationships, other members of the Royal Family are likely to take their cue from the monarch.

The Sussexes’ return does not automatically erase years of tension. But having Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet back in Britain creates more opportunities for private family contact than were possible while the couple were based in California.

A different kind of royal chapter

Harry and Meghan’s return comes after years of public disagreements with the wider Royal Family, including revelations surrounding their departure, interviews, Harry’s memoir Spare and the couple’s Netflix documentary.

Yet the current situation may also offer the family an opportunity to approach those divisions differently.

Princess Anne’s philosophy has always been rooted in practicality rather than spectacle: keep doing the work, remember the fundamentals and avoid unnecessary drama. Her 2020 comments were not explicitly aimed at Harry and Meghan, but their timing made them impossible to ignore.

Now, as the Sussexes begin a new chapter in Britain, the same Princess Royal who once urged the younger generation to remember the basics could find herself in an unexpected position — not as an opponent, but potentially as one of the family members best placed to help keep the door to reconciliation open.

The return itself may be significant. What happens between Harry, his father, his brother and the wider family could ultimately determine whether this is simply a change of address — or the beginning of a very different royal family story.
