King Charles and Queen Camilla’s New Overseas Tour Announced as Harry and Meghan Return to Britain
King Charles and Queen Camilla are preparing for their next major overseas tour — and the timing of Buckingham Palace’s announcement has already sparked speculation about the Sussexes’ return to Britain.
The Palace confirmed today that the King and Queen will undertake an Autumn Tour from October 27 to November 4, travelling to the Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda, and Guyana.
But the announcement came only hours after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived back in the UK with their children, prompting royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams to suggest that the timing was deliberate.
Speaking to GB News, Mr Fitzwilliams said: “The news of the King and Queen’s tour was obviously, in my view, deliberately announced to coincide with their arrival.”
He added: “As it should have been!”
A significant Commonwealth tour
The upcoming trip carries particular significance for the Commonwealth.
The visit to Guyana will mark 60 years of bilateral relations between the UK and Guyana, while the wider tour is intended to highlight communities, cultures and nature across the Commonwealth.
The King and Queen will also be in Antigua and Barbuda during the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
For Mr Fitzwilliams, the timing was especially notable because the monarchy’s relationship with the Commonwealth remains an important part of the Royal Family’s role.
“The monarchy’s link with the Commonwealth is uniquely precious,” he said.
“Harry and Meghan were once to be pivotal links with the Commonwealth.”
However, he argued that the Sussexes’ departure from royal life had changed that relationship.
According to Mr Fitzwilliams, Harry and Meghan had “trashed the institution” in what he described as a “shameful” manner.
Harry and Meghan begin their new UK chapter
The Palace announcement came on the same day that Harry and Meghan returned to Britain after six years living in the United States.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex travelled from California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, on a flight lasting around 9 hours and 55 minutes.
They departed Van Nuys Airport in California at 6.01pm PDT, or 2.01am BST, before landing at Birmingham at 11.56am.
The family are reportedly preparing to establish themselves in the UK for an “extended period of time”.
Reports have suggested that Archie and Lilibet may have been enrolled at a school in the Cotswolds, adding to speculation that Harry and the children could spend a substantial amount of time living in Britain.
The move represents a major shift for the Sussexes, who left royal life in 2020 and subsequently established their main home in California.
Harry expected to remain in Britain for years
The precise nature of the family’s new arrangement remains unclear.
While Harry and the children are expected to establish a more permanent base in Britain, Meghan may continue dividing her time between the UK and the United States.
The Duchess continues to have business interests in California through her As Ever brand, while the couple’s Archewell Productions offices are also based there.
The Daily Mail has reported that Harry could remain in the UK for at least 12 to 15 years, although the Sussexes have not publicly confirmed such a long-term timetable.
Meghan, meanwhile, is expected to maintain a more “international role”, potentially travelling between Britain and California.
Royal tensions remain in the background
The timing of the King’s announcement inevitably places the Sussexes’ return and the monarchy’s Commonwealth commitments side by side.
For years, Harry and Meghan were expected to play a significant role in the Royal Family’s international work before their departure from official duties.
Their return to Britain now comes against the backdrop of continuing tensions with senior members of the Royal Family.
Mr Fitzwilliams believes the Sussexes’ presence in Britain could create a complicated new dynamic for the monarchy.
“They will be a thorn in the side of the Royal Family,” he said.
“How it pans out will be anthropologically fascinating.”
For now, Charles and Camilla are preparing for a Commonwealth-focused tour thousands of miles from Britain, while Harry and Meghan begin another chapter much closer to the Royal Family — leaving the future relationship between the two sides under renewed scrutiny.
