Heartbroken Mum Says Final Goodbye to Nine-Year-Old Minnie Merriman as Emotional Farewell Brings Arbroath to a Standstill
The mother of nine-year-old Minnie Merriman broke down in tears as she said her final goodbye to her daughter before Minnie’s body began the long journey home to Yorkshire.
Laurie Merriman held a small bunny bearing Minnie’s name as she stood beside the vehicle carrying her daughter. Overcome with emotion, she rested her head against the side of the van and quietly said: “Love you forever Minnie.”
She then walked alongside members of her family as the vehicle departed.
Emotional farewell in Arbroath
The farewell took place in Arbroath, Angus, where a large crowd gathered at the seafront to remember Minnie and support her grieving family.
Bikers led the procession before a piper joined the emotional tribute. Laurie cried throughout the memorial as members of the public approached to comfort her, with one mourner telling her: “I’m so sorry.”
Residents also brought flowers, bouquets and toys, while flares were released in Minnie’s memory.
One balloon carried a message that read: “Too precious to ever be forgotten — Minnie.”
The gathering brought much of Arbroath to a standstill as people came out to show their support for the family.
A community rallies around Minnie’s mum
Laurie had been waiting for permission to bring her daughter home.
During that difficult period, local mothers stepped in to help, while businesses donated food and clothing to the family.
The memorial was organised as a way for Minnie’s family to thank the community for the support they had received.
Kerry Tough, who helped organise the event, described the gathering as deeply emotional.
She said the family had been through an extremely difficult time but remained grateful for the kindness, assistance and support shown by people in Arbroath.
Alice Lawson, who also addressed those gathered, said the effort had begun with a group of mothers coming together to support another mother during the worst possible moment.
She thanked everyone on behalf of Minnie’s family.
Minnie’s final journey home
Following the memorial, Minnie’s body began the 280-mile journey from Arbroath in Angus to Wakefield, Yorkshire.
The journey came three weeks after the nine-year-old died.
For Laurie, the departure marked another heartbreaking moment in a tragedy that has devastated her family.
The community that had rallied around her during the weeks she remained in Arbroath gathered once more to say goodbye.
Father charged with Minnie’s murder
Minnie died after she was found severely injured inside a tent on an industrial estate in Arbroath during the early hours of August 3.
Her father, Christopher Rice, 35, has been arrested and charged with her murder.
He appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and has been remanded in custody.
The allegations against him remain before the court.
For Minnie’s family, meanwhile, the focus has been on bringing the nine-year-old home and honouring her memory.
As her final journey began, Laurie stood beside the vehicle carrying her daughter, clutching the bunny with Minnie’s name and delivering one last message to the little girl she loved:
“Love you forever Minnie.”
