Ruby Red Performers brought a playful and unexpected finish to Saturday night’s episode of Britain’s Got Talent, leaving the judges entertained and the female panelists particularly moved by their message of confidence and self-expression.

The 12-member dance group from Withernsea in Hull, made up of women aged between 25 and 65, took to the stage with support from their children for an audition that initially appeared to be anything but conventional.

The group began by pretending they did not know how to dance in time as they performed to a medley of songs. But as the music changed, their routine transformed into an energetic performance in which they removed layers of clothing, eventually performing in underwear and nipple tassels.

Simon Cowell admits he judged them too early

Simon Cowell had already pressed his buzzer before the dramatic change in tempo, but was soon left smiling as the performance took an unexpected turn.

After the routine, he admitted he may have made his decision too quickly.

“I may have pressed my buzzer a little early,” Simon said, before jokingly telling Ruby: “You’re a little minx, aren’t you.”

He added that the act had the kind of entertainment value that could appeal to the Royal Family, saying he believed they would enjoy seeing the group return.

David Walliams was equally enthusiastic, describing the performance as “brilliantly original and brilliantly entertaining.”

Alesha Dixon praises the group’s confidence

The performance had an even stronger impact on Alesha Dixon, who praised the women for promoting confidence and celebrating themselves.

“Ladies, that has made my day. You are giving confidence to women and it’s powerful,” she told the group.

Amanda Holden was visibly emotional after hearing about the group’s journey.

“I feel really emotional. It’s brilliant to see a group of women doing this,” she said. “You make us proud to be women.”

The response highlighted the message behind what initially appeared to be a cheeky and light-hearted audition: encouraging women to feel comfortable and confident in themselves.

The group had to overcome their own reservations

Ruby, who founded the group after moving to the area, revealed that the women had not always been comfortable with showing so much of themselves.

She explained that when they first started dancing together, none of the performers had been willing to “flash the flesh”.

Their BGT performance therefore represented a considerable change in confidence for the group.

The 12 women ultimately embraced the playful nature of the routine, combining comedy, choreography and a message of self-confidence.

Simon eventually went even further in his praise, declaring: “This is one of the best acts I’ve seen on the show I think.”

With all four judges voting in favour of the group, Ruby Red Performers secured their place in the next round of Britain’s Got Talent.
