Tucked away in the secluded greenery of Windsor Great Park, Adelaide Cottage served as an intimate sanctuary for the Prince and Princess of Wales during some of the most transformative and emotionally challenging years of their royal lives. After more than three years in the historic four-bedroom residence, Prince William and Kate Middleton have officially relocated to the eight-bedroom Forest Lodge, closing the door on a chapter marked by immense family resilience.

Constructed in 1831 by celebrated architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville, the estate was originally commissioned by King William IV as a picturesque summer retreat for his wife, Queen Adelaide. Wyatville incorporated materials reclaimed from the partially demolished Royal Lodge, while the interior was adorned with distinctive naval flourishes, including a master bedroom ceiling featuring gilded dolphins and rope ornamentation salvaged from the 19th-century royal yacht, HMY Royal George.

Over its nearly two-century history, the residence became a cherished breakfast spot for Queen Victoria, who favored the grounds so deeply that she buried her beloved King Charles spaniel, Dash, on the estate. In the 20th century, the cottage gained further prominence as the home of Group Captain Peter Townsend during his tenure as equerry to King George VI, decades before his high-profile romance with Princess Margaret captivated the nation.

In the summer of 2022, William and Kate chose to leave their primary London base at Kensington Palace to settle at Adelaide Cottage with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The move offered their children the freedom of a countryside upbringing where they could bike freely around the private parklands. Crucially, the cottage’s location just half a mile from Windsor Castle allowed William to spend invaluable time supporting his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, during the final months of her life.

Despite offering privacy and green space, Adelaide Cottage also bore witness to intense personal hardship for the family. Following the Queen’s passing in September 2022, the residence became the backdrop to Kate’s cancer diagnosis and her demanding recovery.

Seeking a fresh start centered around their growing children, the Wales family secured a 20-year lease on Forest Lodge—a grander property located just four miles away within Windsor Great Park. Intended as their long-term family base even after William ascends the throne, the move allows the royal couple to look toward the future while leaving Adelaide Cottage to return to its quiet place in royal history.
