A large-scale search is underway in Massachusetts for Karen Solomon, the wife of a veteran Worcester police officer found dead inside their home — a case drawing added attention because of Solomon’s long history of advocating for police officers and first responders.
Karen Solomon, 58, was captured on surveillance footage walking near Coes Pond early Tuesday morning, shortly after authorities responded to the couple’s Wildwood Avenue home. Police later identified the deceased man as 57-year-old patrolman Kurt Solomon, a 31-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department.
Authorities have described Karen as a suspect whom they want to question and have warned that she may be armed. As of the latest publicly available updates, investigators had not announced a cause of death for Kurt or publicly detailed what they believe happened inside the residence.

Police released footage showing Karen walking past the Westside Animal Clinic on Mills Road, near Coes Pond, at approximately 5:41 a.m. Tuesday. She appears in casual clothing and flip-flops as she walks through the area.
Police had responded to the Solomon residence shortly before 5:30 a.m. following a report of a medical situation. Kurt Solomon was subsequently found dead inside.
The video provided investigators with one of the clearest indications of Karen’s movements after the incident, and law enforcement concentrated significant resources around nearby wooded areas and water.
Local, state and federal agencies joined the search, with resources including aircraft and K-9 teams. Authorities also alerted residents in the surrounding area as the manhunt continued.
Worcester police urged members of the public not to approach Karen and to contact authorities with information about her whereabouts.
Kurt Solomon was nearing retirement
Kurt Solomon had spent 31 years with the Worcester Police Department and was the father of two adult sons.
Thomas Duffy, president of NEPBA Local 911, described Kurt as a respected and dedicated officer who had become like family to colleagues after more than three decades of service. He was also reportedly approaching retirement.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, and officials have been cautious about releasing details.
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. described Karen as a suspect and said investigators wanted to question her about what occurred at the home. Authorities have also said restrictions surrounding domestic-violence cases limit some of the information they can publicly disclose at this stage.
Karen Solomon’s background adds an unexpected dimension
The investigation has attracted particular attention because Karen spent years publicly supporting the law-enforcement community.
She founded First H.E.L.P., an organization focused on addressing mental-health challenges among first responders, reducing stigma surrounding seeking assistance and supporting affected families.
Her biography with the organization says her work has focused heavily on families who lost officers to suicide and on officers struggling with the belief that they had nowhere to seek help.
Karen is also the author of Hearts Beneath the Badge and The Price They Pay, books dealing with law enforcement, officers’ experiences and mental-health struggles.
She previously served as a member of the 2018 Officer Safety and Wellness Group Meeting and as co-chair of the Data and Research Committee of the National Consortium on Law Enforcement Suicide Prevention. Her First H.E.L.P. biography also lists work connected to implementation of the Law Enforcement Suicide Data Collection Act.
Years of advocacy for officers in crisis

Karen’s work with police mental health was already receiving public attention a decade ago.
During a 2016 interview, she discussed efforts to develop resources for police officers facing crises. She explained that part of her motivation came after her son questioned her about negative perceptions of police, prompting her to focus on stories highlighting officers and their work.
Her organization went on to provide training and family support while tracking first-responder suicides and advocating for changes surrounding mental-health treatment and awareness.
That history has made the current investigation particularly difficult for people who knew Karen through her advocacy work. Friends and colleagues described the situation as difficult to reconcile with the person they believed they knew.
Questions remain over what happened inside the home
Despite the intense search and release of surveillance footage, several central questions remain unanswered.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed Kurt Solomon’s cause of death or provided a detailed account of the events inside the Wildwood Avenue residence. Karen has been sought for questioning, and police have repeatedly cautioned that she may be armed.
Investigators are continuing to piece together her movements after she left the area of the home, while the footage showing her near Coes Pond has become an important part of the timeline.
For now, authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains active. The contrast between Karen Solomon’s years of work supporting officers in crisis and the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death has added an extraordinary layer to a case that still contains significant unanswered questions.
