A Penn State student accused of playing a major role in an alleged campus cocaine trafficking operation apparently did not initially realize that the officers confronting him were actually police.
Thomas Robinson, 23, allegedly resisted officers during a December 2024 raid in State College because he believed his fraternity brothers were playing a prank on him, according to court documents cited by NBC News.
The misunderstanding ended when officers used a Taser and took Robinson into custody.
He is now among 14 people charged in connection with an alleged drug network investigators say brought cocaine into the Penn State community.

The arrest took place at the Delta Upsilon fraternity house, where Robinson was living at the time.
According to the criminal complaint, investigators searched his room and allegedly discovered more than eight grams of cocaine, nearly eight ounces of marijuana and more than 200 amphetamine and dextroamphetamine pills.
Robinson was subsequently charged in connection with several alleged incidents between September and December 2024. His charges include drug manufacturing and delivery, criminal use of a communication facility, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
It was not immediately clear whether Robinson has entered a plea. Court records indicate that he is scheduled for a pretrial hearing next month.
Investigators Were Given the Nickname “T-Rob”

The investigation into Robinson was aided by information from a confidential informant.
Authorities were told that a man known as “T-Rob” was allegedly selling large quantities of cocaine from the Delta Upsilon fraternity house.
The informant also provided investigators with a particularly revealing digital clue: Robinson was allegedly receiving payments through a Venmo account using the username “Tom-Robinson.”
That information helped authorities connect the nickname to Thomas Robinson and the fraternity house.
Robinson Allegedly Identified His Supplier
Following his arrest, Robinson reportedly provided investigators with information about Agostino Abbatiello, another Penn State student associated with Sigma Chi.
Authorities allege Abbatiello supplied Robinson with cocaine and played a leading role in the broader operation.
The investigation has since expanded beyond Robinson and other students, reaching into his own family.
Robinson’s Father Also Faces Charges
Paul Robinson, Thomas Robinson’s father and a prominent Pittsburgh attorney, has also been charged in connection with the investigation.
State prosecutors accuse the elder Robinson of taking steps to conceal evidence, including a safe allegedly containing cash and drugs, and of interfering with the investigation.
He faces charges including felony tampering and hindering apprehension.
Paul Robinson earned his undergraduate degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania before receiving his law degree from New England School of Law in 1992.
He has been admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and specializes in areas including transportation, commercial, construction and insurance law. He currently serves as managing attorney at Pittsburgh-based Meyer, Darragh, Buckler, Bebenek & Eck.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Paul Robinson also has his own history with fraternity organizations. He served as treasurer for Delta Sigma Phi as an undergraduate and was a member of Phi Alpha Delta while attending law school.
Thomas Robinson’s LinkedIn profile, meanwhile, lists him as a salesperson at Kab Incorporated and says he previously worked as a laborer at United States Steel Corporation.
Father and son reside in Churchill, a Pittsburgh suburb.
Delta Upsilon Placed on Interim Suspension
The allegations have also brought consequences for the fraternity connected to Robinson.
Delta Upsilon has been placed on interim suspension amid the fallout from the investigation.
The case now involves multiple defendants and allegations extending beyond the Penn State campus. But one of the most unusual details to emerge from the court documents remains the moment officers arrived to arrest Robinson — and he allegedly believed the raid unfolding around him was nothing more than an elaborate fraternity prank.
