Young ‘BGT’ Star Cormac Thompson Delivers Stunning ‘Ave Maria’ Performance

Cormac Thompson, a rising young vocal star from Lancashire with roots in Northern Ireland, captivated audiences with a powerful rendition of “Ave Maria” during the semi-finals of the BBC’s Young Chorister of the Year competition.
Thompson, who previously gained national prominence at age 12 after auditioning for Series 15 of Britain’s Got Talent, delivered his performance in the historic Salisbury Cathedral during the annual event hosted by BBC Songs of Praise and Radio 2.
A Captivating Cathedral Performance
Standing at the altar of Salisbury Cathedral adorned in traditional chorister robes, Thompson was accompanied solely by a solo piano. His performance demonstrated remarkable control, blending soft, delicate passages with soaring vocal power on the song’s climax.
His execution earned a warm reception from the audience and high praise from the judging panel.
Judges Praise Vocal Quality

Following the performance, the judges expressed admiration for Thompson’s technical skill and range.
One judge highlighted the clarity and dynamic contrast of his vocal delivery:
“There was a bell-like clarity to the way you sang, Cormac. What surprised me was that while you made this beautiful sound for the softer passages, you had this enormous power coming up to the top of ‘Maria’ that took everyone in the room by surprise.”
When asked by the panel how he felt about the performance, Thompson noted that he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Rising Talent
Thompson first gained widespread attention during the COVID-19 lockdown after recording songs for his grandmother, which led to a recording contract with Decca Records and the release of his debut album, Hear My Voice. His appearance at Salisbury Cathedral further solidified his reputation as one of the country’s prominent young classical crossover talents.
