MY HUSBAND THREW OUR SON OUT THE MORNING AFTER HE TURNED EIGHTEEN—ONE YEAR LATER, HE CAME BACK HOLDING A NEWBORN AND BEGGED ME NOT TO TELL HIS FATHER.
For twelve months, Ethan ignored every call and message I sent.
Then one rainy afternoon, he appeared on my doorstep.
He looked thinner.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
And there was a newborn sleeping in his arms.
“Ethan?”
“Please, Mom. Just let me inside.”
The moment the door closed, he said something that made my stomach tighten.
“Lock it.”
Then:
“Don’t tell Dad I’m here.”
I stared at the baby.
“Ethan… is this your child?”
His expression changed instantly.
“My baby?”
He gave a bitter laugh.
“Mom, you really have no idea who you married, do you?”
That was when I stopped breathing.
“What does your father have to do with this?”
Ethan wouldn’t answer.
Instead, he placed the newborn carefully into my arms.
Then he dropped to his knees beside an old suitcase held together with silver tape.
His hands were shaking as he opened it.
Inside were baby clothes.
Hospital paperwork.
A woman’s wallet.
Several envelopes.
And beneath everything…
A photograph.
I picked it up.
Richard was standing beside a young woman I’d never seen before.
His arm was around her waist.
She looked heavily pregnant.
Written across the back were five words:
FOR OUR BABY. LOVE, DAD.
My hands went numb.
I looked at Ethan.
“Who is she?”
He swallowed.
“Her name was Hannah.”
Was.
I hated that word immediately.
Then Ethan removed a hospital bracelet from the suitcase.
Hannah’s name was printed across it.
Beside it was another bracelet belonging to the newborn now sleeping against my chest.
“Why do you have these?”
Ethan looked toward the locked front door.
“Because Hannah made me promise I’d bring the baby to you if anything happened.”
“To me? Why?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because Dad was never supposed to know the baby survived.”
Before I could ask what that meant, headlights swept across the living-room wall.
A car had pulled into our driveway.
Ethan went completely pale.
“No.”
I moved toward the window.
He grabbed my arm.
“Mom, don’t.”
Then I heard a car door slam outside.
Ethan whispered:
“He found us.”
And three seconds later…
Richard’s key entered the front-door lock.
Type BABY and I’ll continue.
