Amazon Prime Video viewers have taken to social media to rave about Babylon Berlin after it received an impressive 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The thrilling TV series takes place in 1929 during the latter years of the Weimar Republic in Berlin, Germany. Throughout four seasons, it follows police inspector Gereon Rath (played by Volker Bruch), who is on assignment from Cologne and on a secret mission to dismantle an extortion ring.
However, he becomes entangled in a dangerous web of shadows while investigating a pornography ring during the epicentre of political and social change in the Golden Twenties. Babylon Berlin premiered on Sky One in 2017 and is an online adaptation of a series of historical crime novels by German author Volker Kutscher. Following its successful first season, the series was picked up by viewers who raved about the gripping storyline, historical accuracy and was labelled a “masterpiece.

As one fan highlighted: “Awesome mix of CABERET, THE WIRE, THE DEUCE, and PARASITE. And it’s a part of history, history that’s all but lost nowadays. It’s fantastic.”

“Amazing series. As a historical drama/thriller set in Germany, this series does not rely on the standard stereotypes and tropes one would expect. The acting is absolutely amazing, 100% worth watching with subtitles. I didn’t want it to end,” said an impressed viewer.
After Babylon Berlin’s first season was awarded 100%, in 2019, it became the highest-rated non-English language show on Sky TV.
Although its fourth season ended in 2022, bosses confirmed the return of its fifth and final instalment, which was filmed last year and is expected to air later this year.
