A longtime nanny described the three children in deeply personal detail, calling baby Callan the “happiest, sweetest, easiest baby” she had ever cared for. The testimony painted a very different picture of the family in the months before the tragedy.

Lindsay Clancy trial live updates: Lindsay Clancy cries as nanny describes ‘happiest, sweetest, easiest’ baby

Editor’s note: Coverage of this case is disturbing. Scroll with discretion.

Grisly new details about killer mom Lindsay Clancy‘s injuries were revealed in court Wednesday — sustained when she downed pills, cut herself and jumped from a second-story bedroom window the night she strangled her children.

Clancy, 35, doesn’t contest that she killed her three young kids in the basement of the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts home in January 2023, while experiencing a slew of postpartum mental illnesses.

The labor and delivery nurse is charged with three counts of murder and faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

Clancy’s defense argues that she is not criminally responsible for killing Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, because she was suffering at the time from the rare, severe phenomenon of postpartum psychosis exacerbated by a dangerous cocktail of 15 psychiatric medications, despite seeking mental health treatment for months.

Lindsay Clancy cries as nanny describes ‘happiest, sweetest, easiest’ baby Callan

By Priscilla DeGregory

Lindsay Clancy appears to be crying in court during the testimony of her former nanny Elaine Rossi who described Clancy’s 8-month-old son, Callan, as the “happiest, sweetest, easiest baby.”

Rossi — who primarily took care of Callan — described each of the children, including saying that 5-year-old Cora was a “girly, girl,” 3-year-old Dawson was “silly and funny,” and Callan was “the happiest, sweetest, easiest baby. He was just a love.”

Rossi said she knew about Clancy’s struggles with postpartum but she was never concerned for the children’s safety.

“I observed a wonderful mom who loved her kids,” Rossi said. “She was very concerned with their safety. She was very concerned with Callan’s eating and sleeping. She was a wonderful mother.”

Nanny for Lindsay Clancy’s baby takes the witness stand

By Priscilla DeGregory

Elaine Rossi, the nanny for Lindsay Clancy’s baby, has taken the witness stand after days of testimony from law enforcement, doctors and experts.

Rossi said she started working for the Clancys in September 2022 and was hired to help take care of 8-month-old Callan three days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. while Clancy’s other two kids were in daycare and school.

Rossi was hired so that Clancy would have help when she went back to work around Thanksgiving 2022 but she started two months early so everyone could adjust to the new routine.

Rossi said that Clancy left her very detailed messages in a notebook about Callan every day she worked.

Lindsay Clancy had ‘slightly elevated’ level of antipsychotic drug in system — but not enough to kill her: expert

By Priscilla DeGregory

Lindsay Clancy had a “slightly elevated” level of antipsychotic drug Seroquel in her system but it wasn’t enough to be toxic or kill her, a forensic toxicologist testified.

Dr. Justin Brower said all the drugs in Clancy’s blood, antidepressants, anti-anxiety and antipsychotic meds, were all in normal if low range in her blood — except for Seroquel.

Justin Brower, forensic toxicologist for NMS laboratories, is pictured during day seven of the Lindsay Clancy trial.AP

That one was “double what you might expect … It’s a little elevated. It’s not in a concentration that I would consider to be toxic or lethal,” Brower explained.

NMS Labs, where Brower works, was only asked to analyze four drugs in her system, not including the benzos (or anti-anxiety medications) other toxicologists testified were in her blood.

But Brower was presented with findings on her Benzo levels and said those were in the lower range of what would be prescribed.

Defense questions why toxicologists took the stand after morning agreement that established facts

By Priscilla DeGregory

Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer questioned why another toxicologist was called by prosecutors after the accused murderer agreed to certain facts of the case this morning.

“Basically, as the court knows, we agree to this, we stipulate to all of this,” Kevin Reddington said as he stood up to cross-examine toxicologist Lisa Yelle.

He said the sides agree to “the blood, the chain of custody, the testing.”

Then the lawyer asked Yelle, “It was a good test, right?”

She confirmed the test was accurate.

This morning, Clancy and prosecutors entered into what’s called a “stipulation of facts,” meaning the defendant wouldn’t contest the facts around DNA, blood and chain of custody issues in hopes of foregoing dozens of witnesses — which could notably speed up the trial that attorneys have said could take as long as eight weeks.

Lindsay Clancy’s blood, urine tested positive for several prescription drugs after killing kids

By Priscilla DeGregory

Forensic scientist Hillary Griffiths, who works in the toxicology unit of the Massachusetts State Police crime lab, just told jurors that she processed Lindsay Clancy’s blood and urine, which tested positive for several psychiatric prescription drugs, after she killed her kids.

Clancy had Seroquel (an antipsychotic) and benzodiazepines including Ativan in her blood, among a few other prescription drugs, Griffiths said.

The mentally ill mother swallowed prescription pills from her nightstand after strangling the children, and before throwing herself out of a second-story window.

The labor and delivery nurse, 35, kept meticulous records of the medications she was taking, the dosages and their effects on her mood and state of mind.

In notes from December 2022, the month before Clancy killed her children, she wrote four days in a row that Seroquel, combined with Valium, relieved the insomnia she had been suffering (“slept well”) — but also brought on “HORRIBLE THOUGHTS.”

Both Lindsay Clancy and Patrick Clancy, her husband at the time and father of her children, have filed lawsuits claiming her doctors failed to properly diagnose her and overmedicated her.

Patrick sued his ex-wife’s doctors for $1 million early this year, around the third anniversary of Cora, Dawson and Callan’s killings, for “overmedicating” the struggling postpartum mother.

Days later, Lindsay filed suit against hospitals, doctors and a nurse who treated her in the lead-up to her horrific act on Jan. 24, 2023, alleging that the “polypharmacy” of people and organizations tending to her all failed to properly diagnose her with bipolar disorder brought on by her third pregnancy.

The supposed failed diagnosis wound up “[exacerbating] her condition and precipitated a severe psychotic break,” she claims in the suit.

Sullivan allowed O’Loughlin to continue testifying, finding it helped give the jurors context.

Sleep training her youngest, baby Callan, at around six months old was tearing her apart — though it was apparently necessary, as Clancy also wrote that she was suffering from “horrible insomnia and anxiety.”

“Hearing him cry for one-plus hours and not intervening just about killed me,” Clancy wrote, adding that she had told her husband, Patrick, “I want to die,” while Callan was crying.

“I even said the words, ‘I wanna die,’ to Pat while he was crying,” the “completely overwhelmed” mother wrote.

Lindsay Clancy speaks to judge outside of jury’s presence

By Priscilla DeGregory

The trial kicked off today with Lindsay Clancy answering a slew of Judge William Sullivan’s questions about how she is agreeing to “stipulated facts” in the case to avoid the prosecution calling certain witnesses to testify.

“You agree that the Commonwealth doesn’t have to prove the facts that are in the stipulation?” Sullivan asked.

“Yes, your honor,” Clancy said again.

The former labor and delivery nurse is wearing a pink short-sleeve blouse and a headband today.

The trial kicked off today with Lindsay Clancy answering a slew of Judge William Sullivan’s questions about how she is agreeing to the facts in the case to avoid testimony from certain witnesses.AP

After the judge asked the series of questions, Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, said: “We have not contested the government’s case in chief” — meaning the defense isn’t arguing against the facts of prosecution’s case, the witnesses they call and the evidence they present.

Instead, the case is centering on Clancy’s mental state, and whether she was cold and calculating in carrying out the murders, or in the throes of severe postpartum psychosis, as the defense has argued.

Reddington said the point was to relieve “the government of having to bring in dozens of witnesses to prove chain of custody of bloods, fluids and all of that.”

He added that they were agreeing to evidence including blood, DNA and the exercise bands that Clancy used to strangle the kids.

Superior Court Judge William Sullivan listens to court proceedings at Plymouth Superior Court on Monday, August 3, 2026.USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Reddington has said that he’s not contesting that Clancy killed her kids, but is instead going to ask the jury to find her not guilty by reason of insanity, on the grounds she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis at the time.

The stipulation — or the facts that Clancy has agreed to — could significantly shorten the trial as many witnesses will no longer be required to testify to prove those facts.
