- During a Q&A, Meghan shared what her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, “loved” about the process
Meghan Markle’s involvement with Cookie Queens came with a bonus perk for her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, and her husband, Prince Harry, 41, served as executive producers on the documentary, set for a theatrical release on Aug. 7, which follows a group of Girl Scouts through the competitive whirlwind of their annual cookie-selling season. On Tuesday, July 28, Meghan attended a special screening of the film in Los Angeles, and she and director Alysa Nahmias answered questions from the audience about what drew them to the project.
When asked if Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have seen the film, Meghan said they had not yet. However, they did rave about a related aspect: “They love all the cookies that we’ve had throughout this process,” Meghan said with a laugh.
Although Meghan previously shared that her favorite Girl Scout cookies are Thin Mints — “It’s such a classic,” she previously told PEOPLE — she’s recently shared some of her family’s healthy eating habits.
During her appearance on MasterChef Australia, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that Archie and Lili eat Brussels sprouts as well as her policy on the kids’ dessert.
“If they say, ‘Mama, can I have dessert?’ We say, ‘If you can pick it, you can have it,’ “ she shared.

At the Cookie Queens screening, Meghan said the movie is more than just about the treats.
“It’s more than just about the Girl Scouts and certainly more than just about Girl Scout cookies,” she explained. “It’s about girlhood, which Alyssa has said quite a bit as we’ve been working through promoting the show, but also it’s about families.”
“I think it’s just such a brilliant portrayal of a really important part of Americana,” she continued. “When I describe it to people, I say, ‘I know you think it’s just gonna be a cutesy film about cookies…’ And yes, while it is very cute and there are lots of great things about cookies, I mean, I don’t know about you guys, but every time we’ve seen it, there’s not a dry eye in the house… There’s just so many really meaningful, grounding moments that I think will make it much more resonant than just something that’s cute. It is so much bigger than that, and that’s a testament to Alysa and the crew and really how hard they’ve worked on this.”
Meghan revealed that she and Harry got involved in the project in the early stages of pre-production, before Nahmias and her team had even cast all of the movie’s central Scouts.
She recalled, “I baked some cookies, and I brought them to the meeting.”
“I just started to really see it come together. I think the whole team, we were so enthusiastic and passionately following this project from the very beginning,” she added. “So when we were able to join forces and be able to help uplift and support this, it’s just really been an honor and pleasure to do so.”
The Duchess of Sussex said she was particularly moved by the young Cookie Queens visionaries.
“All of them have so much ambition and curiosity, and their kindness with each other I love,” she marveled. “People say to you, when you become a parent, you just don’t understand love like that. And then truly, when it happens, it’s so true. And I see myself in all these different parents going, you would do anything for your child. And so it’s just, it’s really beautiful storytelling.”

After celebrating the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, the Cookie Queens team — including Meghan, Harry and Nahmias — announced in March that the documentary had secured distribution. It is set to release in theaters on Aug. 7.
“Girl Scout Cookies are more than a beloved tradition — they’re a big business where talented and hard-working girls generate $800 million in annual sales. For me, this became a fascinating lens to explore a story about girlhood — the ambition, resilience, humor, and vulnerability that emerge as these girls navigate growing up in a world shaped by the tensions between community and capitalism,” Nahmias said at the time of the exciting announcement. “After the incredible response at Sundance, I’m honored to partner with Roadside Attractions, whose commitment to theatrical storytelling makes them the perfect home to bring this film to audiences nationwide.”

The release also included a quote from Meghan about her involvement with the project.
“As a former Girl Scout myself, with my mom as my troop leader, I have a personal affinity for this film and am proud that Archewell Productions has partnered with this award-winning team to executive produce this incredibly captivating film,” she said. “Alysa’s creative point of view, the edgy yet humanizing tone and tenor of the directing, and the glimpse behind-the-scenes into such a nostalgic and also modern tradition of Girl Scout Cookie season are absolutely irresistible.”
During Meghan and Harry’s Sundance appearance in support of Cookie Queens premiere, Meghan took the stage to introduce the film and champion its message, warning the audience not to let the cute and precocious Scouts distract from the documentary’s powerful message about girlhood.
“Yes, it’s probably the cutest film at the festival,” she told the audience. “But I’m also going to go out on a limb and say it’s one of the most powerful and meaningful depictions of an American tradition.”

Meghan and Nahmis also spoke with PEOPLE on the Sundance red carpet, sharing why the message of Cookie Queens spoke to them, both as creatives and mothers.
“For me, as a mom — and with my kids asking me to make a film that they and their friends would really want to watch — I hope it sparks conversations about what it means to grow up today, and opens up questions that can be difficult to have,” Nahmias said. “About the pressures that kids can feel from parents and society, especially girls — how we’re perceived, what our value is, and how we participate in the economy and in society.”

Meghan agreed, telling PEOPLE, “There’s nothing you can add to that. It’s the most perfect answer because it’s so true. That’s what she’s created with this. It’s incredible filmmaking, and I can’t wait for you to see it. I think people are going to love it.”
