Hospital staff at Queen’s Medical Centre faced a race against time after a man sustained critical injuries.

A repeat broadcast of the popular medical documentary, 24 Hours in A&E, was shown on Channel 4 on Wednesday (July 22), and featured a deeply moving case.
Steven, aged 38, was brought to hospital with numerous critical injuries to his head, eye and chest following an incident in which he was trapped beneath a 22-foot wall.
“When you hear someone’s been crushed by a wall collapsing on them, then you’re concerned about multiple and catastrophic injuries,” explained trauma registrar Rob.
Upon arrival at hospital, the paramedic delivered a handover, stating: “This is Steven, he’s 38, working on a rural farmhouse. 65 minutes ago, the whole gable wall of the stone farmhouse fell onto him. He was described as buried from head to foot,” reports Nottinghamshire Live.
He added: “There’s a large bleeding wound above the left eye that goes down to the skull. The left eye is closed, but he’s able to open the right eye. He’s complaining of left sided chest pain with breathing difficulty.”
Steven underwent an emergency CT scan, which revealed a depressed skull fracture alongside numerous other injuries.
Medical staff then needed to establish their priorities and “act fast” before his condition worsened. The trauma registrar promptly contacted neurosurgery after Steven failed to respond when being addressed.

While he was subsequently cleared of arterial damage, a concerning eye injury quickly emerged. A gruesome moment was aired when blood had filled the patient’s left eye and his vision was severely impaired.
The consequences proved permanent, as the episode concluded with confirmation that Steven had lost sight in his left eye.
An on-screen update regarding the patient’s progress stated: “Steven was treated for multiple injuries on the major trauma ward. Doctors tried to save his eyesight.”
Steven’s wife, Gemma, revealed: “When Steve was in hospital, I was so scared to tell the girls, ‘Daddy can’t come home tonight’. It just made me feel awful because I knew they wouldn’t understand why.”

Following a three-week hospital stay, Steven was discharged home, but without some of his eyesight. He said: “I can’t remember a single thing about it. All I remember is I drove to work as I normally would and then the next thing is I woke up on the ward.
“It’s left me totally blind in the left eye, but I feel very lucky to have survived it.”
