Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s future relationship with the Royal Family has once again become the subject of intense discussion after their reported private meeting with King Charles.

The reunion at Highgrove, which reportedly included Archie and Lilibet spending time with their grandfather, has fuelled speculation that the Sussexes may be looking for a new way to reconnect with the institution they stepped away from more than six years ago.
According to reports, those close to Harry and Meghan believe the meeting represented an important step towards rebuilding trust. However, any return would almost certainly look very different from their previous role as senior working royals.

One possibility being discussed is a modern version of a “half-in, half-out” arrangement — allowing Harry and Meghan to support certain charitable causes and public events while continuing their commercial activities outside the UK.
The concept is similar to the arrangement the couple explored before Megxit, although the late Queen Elizabeth II ultimately rejected that model. The Palace’s concern was that royal duties and private business interests could become difficult to separate.
Any future agreement would therefore require strict boundaries. Harry and Meghan would likely need to demonstrate that charitable appearances and official engagements were completely separate from their commercial projects.
Their current business interests remain an important factor. Harry continues his work with organisations including BetterUp and Travalyst, while Meghan has developed her lifestyle brand As Ever and pursued television opportunities.
A return to royal duties would therefore raise questions about whether their existing ventures could continue alongside a closer connection to the monarchy.

Where the family would live is another major issue.
The Sussexes no longer have Frogmore Cottage after it was reclaimed following their move to the United States. Instead, reports have suggested their Portugal property could become a European base, offering easier access to Britain while maintaining privacy.
The coastal property near Melides has also attracted attention because of its connection to Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, who are reported to have a home in the same exclusive development.
Education for Archie and Lilibet could also influence any future decisions. Reports suggest Harry has considered the benefits of a British education, particularly the opportunity for his children to develop stronger connections with extended family and British culture.
However, there are no confirmed plans for the children to move permanently to the UK.
Security remains one of the biggest obstacles.
Harry has repeatedly argued that his family requires greater protection when visiting Britain. His legal battles over security arrangements have continued, but the decision-making process remains separate from the Royal Family.

Even if Harry and Meghan stayed at a royal residence during visits, King Charles would not be able to personally restore taxpayer-funded police protection, as security decisions are handled through official channels.
Another major challenge is public perception.
Although some royal supporters would welcome a reconciliation, Harry and Meghan remain controversial figures following their interviews, documentaries and public criticism of the Royal Family.
The relationship with Prince William is also considered a significant barrier. William has supported a smaller, more streamlined monarchy and has previously appeared reluctant to rebuild the relationship without meaningful changes.
For any return to work, the Palace would need to balance family reconciliation with the wider future of the monarchy.

A possible Sussex comeback would therefore not simply be a matter of Harry and Meghan walking back into royal life. It would require careful negotiations involving duty, privacy, security, finances and public trust.
For now, the reported Highgrove meeting appears to represent a small step rather than a confirmed agreement. Whether it develops into a genuine new chapter for the Sussexes and the Royal Family remains uncertain.
But after years of distance, even the possibility of a new arrangement has reopened one of the biggest questions surrounding the monarchy: could Harry and Meghan find a way back — without returning to the life they originally left behind?
