‘Gilded Age’ Season 4 teases bigger drama, new plotlines ahead of release
Looks like eager fans have to wait until the fall for the new season of “The Gilded Age,” the Julian Fellowes drama that is partially set − and filmed − in Newport.
A behind-the-scenes production teaser released on HBO Max’s YouTube channel promises a fall 2026 release, and hints at even more “sexy,” “ruthless” and “bustle-breaking” plotlines.
The network announced on July 28, 2025, that it had given the green light for another season of the drama from the creator of “Downton Abbey.”
“We are extremely excited for everyone associated with this masterful show, including the creator Lord Julian Fellowes and his outstanding team behind the camera and the performers in front of it,” Steven Feinberg, head of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, told The Providence Journal at the time. “Thank you to Trudy Coxe and her Preservation Society [of Newport County] for making sure those beautiful Newport summer cottages are as pristine as they were in the 1800s.”
What the clips reveal about Season 4
George and Bertha Russell, played by Morgan Spector and Carrie Coon, were last seen in the throes of marital discord. The new clips show them dancing at a ball, and Spector hints at a plotline around the estranged spouses “trying to find their way back to each other.”
The younger couples, Peggy (Denée Benton) and William (Jordan Donica), and Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry (Harry Richardson), each faced their own heartaches in the Season 3 finale. Jacobson hints at “consequences.” Phylicia Rashad is back as William’s mother, and the clips show her continuing to push the buttons of Peggy’s mother, played by Audra McDonald.
Newly rich inventor Jack (Ben Ahlers) will be back. At the end of Season 3, he was moving out of the van Rhijn household and into his own new digs.
Whatever viewers are in for, veteran actress Christine Baranski, who portrays Agnes van Rhijn, says Season 4 is her favorite.
Will there be baby news?
“The Gilded Age” was casting for babies, newborn to 5 months, to play an infant during April filming in Newport.
The chosen infant or infants will have to act as if they are a newborn being held by one of the principal cast members, according to the casting call.
