What should have been a routine trip into the backyard ended in unimaginable heartbreak for one California deputy and his loyal K-9 partner.

Santi, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois who served with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, was fatally struck by a vehicle after illegal fireworks reportedly frightened him so badly that he leaped over a backyard fence and ran into the street. The driver who hit him allegedly fled the scene.

A Loyal K-9 Lost in Seconds

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Santi’s handler intentionally kept him indoors on the evening of July 4 because illegal fireworks were being set off throughout the neighborhood.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., the deputy briefly let Santi into the backyard to relieve himself.

Moments later, an aerial mortar reportedly exploded nearby.

Startled by the blast, Santi jumped over the fence and bolted. Despite his handler immediately chasing after him, the frightened K-9 continued running as fireworks echoed through the neighborhood.

Santi was later found severely injured near Shaw and Helm Avenues in Clovis after being struck by a vehicle. He was rushed to a veterinary hospital but sadly did not survive.

Authorities say the driver did not stop. The Clovis Police Department continues to investigate the hit-and-run.

Illegal Fireworks Continue to Endanger Animals

For four years, Santi faithfully served alongside his handler as a working K-9 with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

His death has become a heartbreaking reminder that even trained law enforcement dogs are not immune to the overwhelming fear caused by sudden explosions.

Those who knew Santi remember him not only as a dedicated working dog but also as a beloved companion whose life ended far too soon.
