Comprising two six-part series, The Gold dramatises the notorious Brink’s-Mat robbery which took place on 26 November 1983.
During the robbery, £26 million in cash, gold bullion and diamonds were stolen from the Heathrow International Trading Estate in London, from a warehouse operated by Brink’s-Mat, a once joint enterprise between US security company Brink’s and London-based company, MAT Transport.
In 2025, the stolen loot’s value would equate to approximately £290 million. At the time, it was the biggest robbery in history.
While several arrests and convictions were secured – including Micky McAvoy and Brian Robinson for armed robbery – the bulk of the stolen gold remains unrecovered to this day.
The Gold features Hugh Bonneville, Dominic Cooper, Charlotte Spencer, Emun Elliott, Sean Harris, Jack Lowden, Tom Cullen and others in its cast.
The debut six-episode series premiered on BBC One in February 2023. The second run, also consisting of six episodes, launched on BBC One in June 2025.

The Gold has garnered many favourable reviews from critics and viewers alike, securing an impressive 96% rating on the renowned review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Critic Barbara Allen noted: “The second and final series follows the other half of the money on an international trail that takes in the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and the Isle of Man, and it’s just as remarkable and off-kilter a watch.”
One viewer said: “Somehow they made the aftermath just as gripping as the robbery itself. Brilliant performances and not a wasted episode.”
Another agreed: “I thought season 2 was every bit as good as the first. I loved how the story expanded beyond the robbery itself and showed how far the consequences spread.
